Dream Renewal

I was given "Fight For Your Dreams" as a reading assignment. I was thrilled at first because I have longed followed Les Brown. I was disappointed at first because I realized the book was not really a book by Les but one composed of stories by other motivators and speakers. I must say that I was greatly surprised because I decided to go ahead and read at lest the first story, then another and before I knew it I had read the entire book. Each of the story as the book cover states speak of racism, abusive, artists, entrepreneurs, speakers, etc. Yet as different as each story is the key point is that they all recognized their ability to overcome issues and turned their negatives into positive. Instead of Les telling you their story he has allowed them to tell their story so the book is like sitting down and getting to know new friends.

I like the fact that the background information on each is at the end of the story along with contact information if your wish to learn more about them. "The Power of Never Giving Up" is something that can be utilized in almost any setting. They are short stories that are great "ice breakers" if you are holding a meeting or ending on and need something to close out. I found a renewed interest in my own dream from reading each of the stories.

I would recommend this a good book to have if you are a speaker who wishes to motivate or mentor anyone. You can share one or more of the stories and expond on them to teach and allow someone to reach for their dreams. We often talk about role models yet most of the people in the story are people who had ordinary lives with ordinary role models who helped make a difference in their lives. The best role models are those that we have time to get to know. We can learn from the positive and negative things in our lives. These story allow us an opportunity to reflect on our own stories and see the dreams that we may have and how either we've lived our own dreams or those of others.

This turned out to be a good book after all for each story was needed. Some were more motivating than others but the diversity of the authors allowed for anyone reading to possible at least identify with one or more. I think that this would be a great classroom or small group assignment to allow discussion of the various stories and see the insight gained.

I highly recommend it and was deeply motivated to re-visit my own dreams.

Very Inspirational!!!

This is a great book!! From the very first page, it inspires. Reading the various stories was life changing for me. The human spirit is incredible and Les Brown has brought that forward in each and every story. It is definitely worth reading!

About the Author
David Northrup teaches courses on the history of sub-Saharan Africa, Atlantic history, globalization, and world history at Boston College. His research has dealt with pre-colonial Nigeria, early colonial Congo, the Atlantic slave trade, Asian and African indentured labor migration, and African encounters with Europe in the pre-colonial era. His work has included British, Belgian, and French colonialism in Africa. He served as President of the World History Association during 2004 and 2005.

Europeans Through African Eyes

The topic of African history cries out for clarity and insight. As I've mentioned before in this space, the number one attitude of American's towards Africa is "Ignorance" followed closely at number two with "Ignorance." You can't really blame people, finding out the truth about what happened in Africa is a task complicated by contemporary racial politics on three different continents. I know that Africa has lots of social problems and such, but it's hard to look at a continent with more then a billion people (and climbing) and say "Oh- what a disaster." You want to see a disaster? Check out Russia- negative birthrate? That is failure for you. My take is that people just need to chill out about Africa and try to appreciate some of the astonishing diversity and cultural power that comes out of there.

Africa's Discovery of Europe is a good continent wide introduction to the relationship between Africa and Europe. It is, as much as possible, written from the perspective of Africans and comes with ample footnotes for further reading. Northrup's main thesis is to dispel the "ignorant african" stereotype in terms of their trading relationships with Europeans. In the words of Northrup "Africans got what they wanted out of Europeans." During the time period covered in this book, the Europeans are hardly dominant. From the Portugese traders of the 15th century onwards, the Europeans existed on the fringes of a sprawling continent with it's own empires, nations and peoples. Africa was a place where slavery was already existent, and most of the slaves who made it to the New World tended to spend time as the property of other Africans before they were actually sold across the sea. Northrup even notes that many freed slaves remarked that their main issue was not with slavery, but with the fact that their African owners sold them out of Africa.

About the Author
Carol H Rounds is lecturer in Hungarian and has been teaching at Columbia University since 1988. Previous titles include Hungarian:An Essential Grammar, another in the Routledge language series.

Erika Sólyom, an NYU graduate, is a sociolinguist and she has been teaching Hungarian as a Foreign Language at Eotvos Lorand University and Corvinus University of Budapest. She is also the director of the American Corner Budapest at Corvinus.

The Best Available Resource

Perhaps the best thing about Colloquial Hungarian, what sets it apart from other available resources, is that it makes learning Hungarian--a task that, at first, feels like climbing mount improbable--approachable and fun. I am a second-year Hungarian student who this summer had the opportunity to study in Budapest with Erika Solyom. Before finding the book (and Professor Solyom), I bounced through a variety of materials: an old US State Department coursebook, a few grammars, a Teach Yourself course, and an audio course from Pimmsler. Everything I tried seemed to be missing something fundamental. The grammars excluded, all the more pedagogically-oriented materials I tried were either too analytic, grounded in a rote militaristic logic of drills and tiring repetition, or too soft, focused only on building the capacity to speak at a basic, I-just-landed-and-can-greet-the-customs-officer level. I'm not saying these materials weren't helpful. They were, each in their own way. But none succeeded in bringing together so seamlessly all the requisite components of language learning as Colloquial Hungarian. For me, finding the book changed everything.

Suddenly, learning Hungarian not only seemed attainable, it was fun. The book's bedrock is a story, unfolded through dialogues (available on CD and excellent) and centered in the lives of a handful of colorful characters that, I admit, I grew quite attached to. I think this is something unique in a language-learning book. Is it corny, funny, cute? Maybe so. But it works wonderfully to get you more invested in the material; at least it did for me. The grammar unfolds in a manageable, brick-by-brick way, and it encourages you to focus on one thing at a time, to seek out patterns, and to build and build at a slow pace that assures you won't get burned out, feel hopeless, or give up altogether.

Learning Hungarian is already hard. Why make it harder? If you want a book that empowers you as a language learner, that leaves you feeling like you can do this, like you ARE doing this, buy Colloquial Hungarian. Believe me, I've tried many others, and this is hands down the best.

Brings an impossible language within reach.

I studied from Erika Solyom's book while studying in Budapest, Hungary. For me, learning the Hungarian language seemed to be a very intimidating task, but Colloquial Hungarian made the process much easier, even fun. The characters, dialogues, cultural items and poetry included in the book expose the reader to Hungarian culture which helped me have a deeper understanding of the Hungarian lanuage. I strongly recommend this book.

Great Starter

The first two things everybody asked me when I told them I was going to be studying in Budapest for a semester were "Wait, are you going to actually LEARN Hungarian?" and "Isn't that one of the hardest languages ever?"
After taking the class for just one semester and having the opportunity to learn from this book in particular, I can say that it was a lot easier than I imagined. As Markus said, each new section builds on the last, which really helps to solifidy your base knowledge with each new unit. While I would change the order just slightly (putting things like numbers closer to the beginning), I can definitely say that without this book (and the great instruction that went along with it), I would have been lost for the entire semester. Unlike other books I've seen for the language, this one actually shows you the logic behind a lot of the grammar - something that comes in handy when you encounter a new word. At only half-way through the book, you begin to be able to distinguish what parts of speech foreign words belong to and even be able to somewhat discern what the basic idea of the text is.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone trying to learn Hungarian.

About the Author

Mike Nash is one the world's leading experts on hypnosis. He is a prolific researcher and clinical educator, who also maintains an active clinical practice. He is Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee, and is Editor Emeritus of The International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, the world's premiere venue for scientific and applied hypnosis. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1983 and completed his clinical internship at Yale University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry in the same year. He has published two books, one on the research foundations of hypnosis and another on integrating hypnosis into clinical practice. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology (ABPP), and is the recipient of 18 national and international awards for his scientific, clinical, and teachng accomplishments. Amanda Barnier is an Associate Professor and Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Research Fellow in the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Amanda began her career in Psychology at Macquarie University, graduating in 1991 with a BA(Hons). She completed a PhD in Psychology (1996) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley. Amanda then returned to Australia and UNSW as an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow and later as an ARC Queen Elizabeth II Fellow. She returned to Macquarie University in 2007.

Fountain of Knowledge

Not a light read but certainly a very informative one. Packed with studies and conclusions, much of which is contradictory but that is the nature of hypnosis. A book well worth the expense and effort.

Its clear and concise, a good intro into Hypnosis. Bit pricey I suppose but then I can’t find anything else as good
