Hanta Yo: A Real Treasure

I'll state up front that this book has a very special place in my heart. The themes, places and lessons presented by Ruth Beebe Hill have crossed my path many times since I first read it 22 years ago. While some may complain about the authenticity of some of the facts, no one should doubt the power of the story.
This multi-generational drama focuses on the Mahto (Bear) Band during the turbulent years of westward European migration, approximately 1750 until 1830. The story follows several families but culminates in a character named Ahbleza whose personal philosophy and exploits transcend time and place to tell the story of a people and not of a single person. This is the point that opens the book to criticism. Ruth Beebe Hill spent decades researching and producing a story of the plains Indians; their traditions, philosophy, and terminology. No single historically accurate character could have possibly conveyed the entire essence of these people. Therefore, through song and ceremony; oral and written history; and the cumulative voices from the past - Ruth Beebe Hill created something much more than a history or a dramatic story, she (as described by Chunksa Yuha in his Introduction) built a "bridge that spans a gulf two hundred years wide."
A sad post-script. Ruth Beebe Hill and Chunksa Yuha (author of the Introduction) hand wrote a message to the people of Gulfport, MS in the margin of the copy in the main branch library. Hill had spent her winters in the area for some time and this book was apparently a personal donation to that library. I spotted the book there in 1997 after giving a presentation to a local community club and immediately asked to purchase it since it hadn't been checked out in many years. I was refused then and several more times since. Unfortunately the storm surge from Hurricane Katrina completely destroyed the library. I think of my little loss and I can only imagine how many other treasures were lost in the personal collections and libraries during that storm.

Before buying this book you should read what academics and Lakota people say about it

I loved this book when I read it in the 1980s, and it is still on my shelves. However, some who are qualified to speak authoritatively say Ruth Beebe Hill has taken considerable liberties with the historical facts.
