Learn jQuery UI from the horses mouth! It won't get better than this.

I got a copy of this book and really enjoyed reading this. Its a very practical book and code snippets and concepts can be directly applied to your work. The author has given in-depth coverage on widget and advanced UI customization.

This is a very handy book for those involved in heavy JavaScript development. Besides there is a good coverage on poly-filling HTML5 with jQuery UI.

If you are working with jQuery UI in your project then this book is a must reference for your developers. It will save you lot of time and the coverage on widget factory is a treat.

This book can be your go-to guide for putting jQuery UI into action

TJ VanToll had two straightforward goals in mind when he decided to write this nicely prepared book: "I wanted to write about how to use the jQuery UI components in real-world usage scenarios and applications. I also wanted to tackle the tough questions for jQuery UI users. [Such as] Why should you use the jQuery UI datepicker instead of the native date picker included in HTML5? How do you use jQuery UI on mobile devices, especially in low bandwidth situations?"

According to the jQuery Foundation, "jQuery is a fast, small, and feature-rich JavaScript library. It makes things like HTML document traversal and manipulation, event handling, animation, and Ajax much simpler with an easy-to-use API that works across a multitude of browsers. With a combination of versatility and extensibility, jQuery has changed the way that millions of people write JavaScript."

The problem with popularity, of course, is that jQuery became widely employed soon after it was introduced in 2006. Users quickly created a flood of jQuery plugins that, Van Toll writes, "had inconsistent APIs, and often had little or no documentation. Because of these problems, the jQuery team wanted to provide an official set of plugins in a centralized location. In September 2007 they created a new library with these plugins--jQuery UI."

He adds: "From a high level, jQuery UI was, and still is, a collection of plugins and utilities that build on jQuery. But dig deeper and you find a set of consistent, well-documented, themeable building blocks to help you create everything from small websites to highly complex web applications. Unlike jQuery plugins, the plugins and utilities in jQuery UI are supported by the jQuery Foundation. You can count on them to be officially supported and maintained throughout the life of your application."

Well-written and well-illustrated, jQuery UI in Action reflects VanToll's knowledge and experience as a professional web developer and member of the core jQuery UI team.

The book is structured into three parts, encompassing 12 chapters. And it assumes readers have at least basic experience with JavaScript, CSS, and jQuery.

Part One's chapters introduce jQuery UI and "the ins and outs of widgets...the core building blocks of jQuery UI."

Part Two's chapters offer "a comprehensive look at the components of jQuery UI: twelve jQuery UI widgets (chapters 3-4), five jQuery
UI interactions (chapter 5), numerous jQuery UI effects (chapter 6), and the jQuery UI CSS framework (chapter 7)." VanToll explains how each component works and shows how to apply the knowledge to real-world applications. The example projects include: building complex webforms with jQueryUI; using layout and utility widgets; adding interaction to interfaces; and using built-in and customized themes to provide "a consistent look to all widgets."

Part Three focuses on "Customization and advanced usage." Here, VanToll explores such topics as using the widget factory to create custom widgets, preparing applications for production, and building a flight-search application "at real-world scale." In the final chapter, he takes us under jQuery's hood "to dig into a series of utilities, methods, and properties intended for more advanced usage of the library."

The name says it all

The name says it all: the book is something you could put into action and apply to your web application development immediately.

I was working on a project to integrate some web applications when I got a copy of "jQuery UI in Action". Since the vendor's applications UI is using some specific HTML template system that seems clunky, ugly and hard to customize, I decided to give jQuery UI a try. It really made a difference after I followed the examples in the book as I was able to significantly simply the logic of my script while making the theme similar to the old web application the project is replacing.

The author has been using and developing jQuery UI for more than five years and it shows his in-depth understanding of jQuery UI in a easy-to-follow way of description. He used a few real-world examples to explain different aspects of jQuery UI that could be easily used for one's web applications. I ending up using a lot for my project from his datapicker part of the doctor's appointment example.

All the examples are very easy to follow with detailed annotations. The author stated in the foreword he tried not to make this a copy of API document but rather some real-world applications. The book definitely has achieved the goal.

What I also like about this book is that the author is very frank in comparing jQuery UI vs HTML5 and also the pros and cons of jQuery UI. And I found its appendices are quite useful. I usually use FireBug for testing my javascript but the online testing tools the author recommended definitely helps.

The book does not have too much information about generating dynamic data from database on server side. But that should not be considered a shortcoming as it is not directly related to jQuery UI at all and you could find tons of information for that elsewhere easily. In addition, the book does provide an example to use jQuery UI vs. GitHub web api.

Song of Songs written in the most beautiful translation I have ever read.

For years I knew that Song of Songs was about Christ and His bride but I always had a difficult time understanding it. Some of the symbolism kind of went over my head. I had been taught that it was more of a book on marriage and being single I tended to skip over it. I would read a few verses here and there to remind me that God loves me. Several months ago I bought the gospel of Luke in the passion translation and it was incredible. I don't know if its just the season I am in but I felt the need to order Song of Songs. I felt like the Lord was trying to whisper something to me. When I got it last week I started reading it and I was blown away by the fact that it was all so clear to me. The love God has for his children His bride just swept me away. The footnotes have helped me greatly in understanding the symbolism of all the spices. "I want to smell like cinnamon, the odor of holiness" I have been reading the book out loud every night for the last week. I cry every time I read it, not just tears but a deep cry from my heart that overwhelms me. . It's not that I did not love God before but I have now been awakened to the depth of His love for me and for His bride. Just one glance from me or the sound of my voice in prayer and He is intoxicated with love for me. His whispers of love is the most beautiful sound. Song of Songs is the song above all songs. I highly recommend this to everyone.

God's Love Overwhelmed Me!! His Presence Flooded Me!!

I could only read the first 4 chapters and then I broke into tears because God's love overwhelmed me.
This book has brought me closer to God, I never really liked the Song of songs in the past, probably because I was carnal minded.
I thought Song Of Songs was kind of boring until the day I read this book out loud... WOW!!!
God's presence flooded my entire being The first day I The Passion Translation out loud, and I'm still a Passionate lover of God today...
Praise Jesus!! If you love the anointing, you'll love this book...

Grade 8-12 Brian Robeson, 13, is the only passenger on a small plane flying him to visit his father in the Canadian wilderness when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. The plane drifts off course and finally crashes into a small lake. Miraculously Brian is able to swim free of the plane, arriving on a sandy tree-lined shore with only his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present. The novel chronicles in gritty detail Brian's mistakes, setbacks, and small triumphs as, with the help of the hatchet, he manages to survive the 54 days alone in the wilderness. Paulsen effectively shows readers how Brian learns patienceto watch, listen, and think before he actsas he attempts to build a fire, to fish and hunt, and to make his home under a rock overhang safe and comfortable. An epilogue discussing the lasting effects of Brian's stay in the wilderness and his dim chance of survival had winter come upon him before rescue adds credibility to the story. Paulsen tells a fine adventure story, but the sub-plot concerning Brian's preoccupation with his parents' divorce seems a bit forced and detracts from the book. As he did in Dogsong (Bradbury, 1985), Paulsen emphasizes character growth through a careful balancing of specific details of survival with the protagonist's thoughts and emotions. Beware for Younger Readers!

I am a grandmother with small granddaughters, one of whom is a very precocious reader. She is in first grade, and I ordered Hatchet with another book, which she fortunately became interested in. In a fit of boredom, I picked up the book that was left at my house. I was tremendously relieved she had not taken Hatchet to begin it, without the knowledge of me or her parents! I do not think it would have been appropriate for her, at the age of 7. I will be placing it in an unobtrusive location, to wait for her to read when she is a couple years older.

I find it interesting that not a single review I found mentioned at the start, when the pilot of the small aircraft dies mid-flight, the process is very specifically detailed--the odor, the vision of his face as he dies. Additionally, Brian is angry about his mother, and her extra-marital affair--this book is significantly more explicit about adult problems than most children's literature that is written for 3rd and 4th graders. I thought, the Force was with me! I cannot imagine my granddaughter reading this book now. The lesson I learned, is to peruse books I'm not familiar with before I hand them over--I am writing about a little girl whose mother read portions of The Yearling to her at age 5, when she begged and pleaded, and sat attentively throughout! (my daughter said she "edited" as she read the book) For younger readers, I'd advise parental supervision, and discussion of the issues detailed in The Hatchet, if your child is ready for it.

First in an adventure series with great appeal for middle-school, high-school,
and older readers. This is the kind of book that continues in your dreams
once you have put it down. Great for reluctant readers, as well as ESL learning
Gary Paulsen is never consdescending or obviously trying to simplify his
stories. They are simply remarkable at all levels. This would be a great
gift or prize for any boy or girl. Adults seem equally enthusiastic about
this unforgettable book. It does not involve sex, seduction, or ramance,
except the romance of the wild and breathtaking adventure and survival
skills. This story inspires readers to think about our
innate intelligence to survive under difficult circumstances.
A fast-paced, but thoroughly modern Robinson Crusoe adventure.

A great lesson on perseverance

I read this book in elementary school back in 1995-1996. I'm re-reading it and so far it has held up well.

As a kid, this book gave me an appreciation for the outdoors and surviving in the world when the odds are stacked against you. A great lesson on perseverance.

It also instilled an idea in my mind to not take everyday commodities and experiences for granted.

I loved Gary Paulsen's books as a child, and the other Hatchet books in this series are great, too. I just discovered writing this review that there is now a 5th book.

Internal Medicine Practise Questions

MKSAP 5 contains 450 NEW questions that are different from the questions in the previous edition. The questions are well written, and incorporate the latest calculations used in evidence based medicine. The explanations are easy to understand and appropriate for a MS3 or MS4. I found the questions in this book to be a bit simpler than those on WORLD and I purchased this book because I felt that I needed some simpler questions to strengthen my foundation before I continued to work through WORLD. (Please refer to my review for SUTM).

Excellent Shelf Resource

The questions were appropriate as a review resource for the Medicine Shelf. The explanations were both nicely worded, and they didn't tangentially explain topics that were low-yield.

I've recommended this book to classmates on their IM clerkship.

Con: This is true of all practice question books; it was sometimes a challange to flip back and forth between questions and answers without inadvertently seeing the answer to another question.

Absolutely essential for the medicine shelf. If you don't get this, you're crazy. Not so much of a difference from the earlier versions, but I like to make sure I read updated versions because a lot of the answers here are evidence-based.

Far Superior Time Travel

Cynthia Luhrs is an author to watch. Her grasp of everyday life in medieval times is superior to most. I LOVE her whole
Meriweather series and have read them over and over. The violence is clearly due to the century (14th) ...a bit shocking
but we have our own brand today! Very interesting the way her characters are developed and how the girls adapt to
life 700 yrs ago. Her plots are all different and she develops them in such a superb way as to take the reader out of
the living room into the past.
I have started on the next series and am anxious to see how they develope. Will keep all on my Kindle and read them
over and over.

I'm waiting to start book 3. I didn't have sisters so it's fun to read this to enjoy the joy and frustration caused by each. The story in the14th century is a bonus and the time travel part is best I enjoyed the adventure so far now for the youngest sisters adventure

large heavy volume / not practical

Looks good on the coffee table; but not much use for anyone wanting to learn to draw. 90% of the illustrations are of isolated body parts- an arm, a foot. No dynamic poses at all.The animal anatomy while good is also static. Only book I'm returning so far.
...By contrast "Anatomy and Drawing" by Victor Perard covers, children, faces, stick figures, proportion, bones, muscels-and doesn't weigh 15 pounds!
...Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Figure Drawing" shows what can be done with foreshortening.
...Giovanni Civardi's books are worth checking out, they have received lots of rave reviews.
...Also superior is Classic Human Anatomy: The Artist's Guide to Form, Function, and Movement [Hardcover]

Pan-specie study of the mechanics of movement and anatomy

I purchased this book for my own use as an artist and massage therapist two years ago. I have used it so often that I was able to sell over half of my old reference books. The clarity and quality of the work in this book is unsurpassed by anything else I have seen. It IS an advanced work for artists, but you will be hard pressed to find a better book on the actual mechanics of movement and conformational relationship. As artists, this is an area that most of us need to tackle eventually. I have given it (with great results) as a gift to a 14 year-old artist nephew, an adult advanced artist and a horse/dog trainer. I am now buying six more copies to give to the staff of a local college where I work. We hope to make this one of our reference works in anatomy and functional observations. The comparative anatomy portions includes: human, equine, canine, feline, lion, sheep, cattle, hog, camel, simian, crocodile, seal, etc. There are detailed sections for each of the first eight/nine animals and I would have been well satisfied with the human portion alone. In forty years, I have NEVER found a better buy for my money. sf
