This report includes unrestricted government information, which is for the first time assembled collectively and rephrased for application to civilian facilities. Eight chapters outline the steps commonly followed in this practice. These are the determination of the threat, methods by which structural loadings are derived for the determined threat, the behavior and selection of structural systems, the design of structural components, the design of security doors, the design of utility openings, and the retrofitting of existing structures. This report is the first transfer of this technology to the civil sector, and provides complete methods, guidance, and references for structural engineers challenged with a physical security problem.

Lars Jensen presents a compelling analysis of the disciplining of the fields of scholarship, locating each in its specific history of institutionalisation and political and ideological orientation, while demonstrating the ways in which the fields developed a parallel focus around the place of the individual in terms of race, ethnicity, class and gender. The figure of Stuart Hall looms large, providing the intellectual structure for a comparative study as well as acting as a political barometer for the struggle by a Black British intellectual moving between Britain and the Caribbean. An original and provocative book that explains the continuing value of critiquing power and disciplinary practices. The book is very clearly written in a step-by-step manner, and contains an abundance of well-chosen examples illuminating practice and theory in information modeling. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in conceptual modeling and databases.

Dr. Terry Halpin is a professor at Northface University. He has led database research teams at several companies including Visio Corporation and Microsoft Corporation, where he worked on the conceptual and logical database modeling technology in Microsoft Visio for Enterprise Architects. Fantastic Book

If you intend to create genuinely useful business applications without first creating an accurate conceptual data model and deriving the database schema from the model, then I hope your projects have very large budgets and flexible deadlines, because you'll need both. Accurate conceptual data models are not an academic curiousity, they are a practical necessity. Well designed databases are the heart of every business application, and accurate conceptual data models are the foundation of every well designed database.

This book presents a method for data modeling called Object Role Modeling (ORM). If you've never created a data model before, you might as well learn the best method from the start. If you've used E-R (Entity Relationship) modeling before, this is your chance to learn a method that overcomes the limitations of E-R, while building on the knowledge you already have.

ORM is based on facts (assertions about the business sphere you are modeling), not entities and attributes. Business users understand facts much better than they understand data modeling abstractions. By using ORM facts, you create your data model in a language that business users can understand and validate. Poor communication with business users and inadequate understanding of requirements are major causes of design deficiencies. ORM solves these issues through its fact based approach.

ORM is also much more expressive than any other popular data modeling notation, ncluding UML and all major flavors of E-R. Many business rules should be expressed as data constraints, but traditional data modeling languages don't do well at capturing these constraints. By capturing the constraints in an ORM model and validating with the users, you make the construction of a good application much easier.

Halpin is an excellent writer, and this book is very easy to read. The many examples and crisp writing style mean that you'll actually understand what the author intends, a refreshing change from most computer books. If you've read the previous edition of this book, this update is very worthwhile. There is a lot of expanded and new material, and you'll be happy you purchased the new edition.

The best book on database design

This new edition of Information Modeling and Relational Databases maintains its predecessor's achievement of being the best, most complete book out there on design of information systems, and particularly of database schemas -- and of seeming a few decades ahead of the rest of the pack! The relational database theory world seems to move at a rather glacier-like pace -- with the result that some of the schema design methods still in common use have stayed well past their "obsolete by" date. But as a reviewer of the first edition said, this book presents MATURE database design technology; and it can only be hoped that the database design world will sooner, rather than later, realize the immense, and immensely practical, value of the mature theory and design procedure that this book presents. Do you want to be able to arrive at the correct schema the first time? or even to know whether you've reached it or not? This is the book that shows you how, and gives you a rich, formal modeling notation that has very significant and improving tool support. Terry and Tony have both added very valuable new chapters to the book, and expanded and updated the other chapters, so that this is a very much improved book -- as amazing as that may seem to those (like me) who loved the first edition. This book will, in my opinion, be setting the standard for books on information system design for many years to come.

Get to a higher level when modeling data: concept models

Before knowing about Dr. Helpin's CSDP, I often struggled to find the appropiate data model for the project at hand. Model validation with users was not straight-forward: users do not think of the world in terms of entities and relationships of the ER model - They think about facts and concepts. Now, I do not try to fight with a data model, I build the ORM model and let the procedure to build the ER one.

About the Author

Mykola Borzenkov received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at Lviv Polytechnic National University, Lviv, Ukraine. The Ph.D. thesis “Synthesis and properties of surface active monomers based on derivatives of based on derivatives of hydroxy and amino carboxylic acids” were carried out under supervision of prof. Orest Hevus. At present time M. Borzenkov is a research assistant at Department of Physics at University of  Milan-Bicocca (Milan, Italy). His main research fields are synthesis and application of functional surface active monomers, synthesis, functionalization and biomedical application of gold nanoparticles.

Orest Hevus is a professor of Organic Chemistry. From 1979 to the present he has been working at Lviv Polytechnic National University. His research field is synthesis of functional surface active peroxides and monomers.

Get ready for a ride with the most unlikely of tour guides. He's a flea, (quite literally), with a seemingly tireless desire to live out the voyeur's dream. Beginning with a young woman and travelling into the depths of titillating depravity, this narrative will amuse and arouse even the most detached of readers. It's often supposed that our Victorian predecessors had a simplistic and becalmed view of what sex should be and that they spent their most intimate moments teeter-tottering between self-conscious embarrassment and a few seconds of climactic pleasure--not so! This interesting book explores the fact that intelligent people everywhere, and from every time, share some common attributes in the sexual arena: they explore their own fantasies to extremes and in very complex detail. Another link to our collective past? Well, maybe that would be telling it a little too dramatically. The book is marred by a rather one-note plot line and it becomes faintly out of touch when exploring some of the more harmless "taboos", but after all, it is erotica. And a flea's personal views, might, after all, need to be a bit focused, even if he tries for the profound. He's still just a self-proclaimed little love bug.

This book is such a beautiful and saucy read. Brilliantly written with wonderful descriptions. A fast read that you won't want to put down. A book you can read over and over. Definitely a feast for the sensual mind.

A Flea Sees All

I had read about this book long ago. One of the underground series of erotic literature in the 1800's, it clearly is the product of a fertile and imaginative mind. The sexual instincts of man have been around and kicking ever since we came into this world, and the more we push it under ground, the more it surfaces in bizarre ways.

However, having said that, there is a sense of amusement in the way that the book has been written, and I read it for the subtle tongue in cheek humour as much as for the erotic aspect of the book. It is a fun book, which allows sufficient room for the readers imagination to play. This, I suppose, is what erotic literature should do

Very disappointed. The spiral binding is really great because the music always lies flat, but the product description did not say the music in the spiral-bound version would be photocopied from the original. I assumed that the music would be the original. The photocopies are not as crisp and much harder to read. Sent it back as soon as I opened the cover.

This scale book is great, as there are many different scales and arpeggios to work with. This book is fantastic, even when proceeding to more advanced levels. It's a great book for all levels, and will never outgrow the student.
