If you believe Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness, our children are in grave danger of becoming illiterates--and the McGuinnesses are the only ones who can save them. Reading Reflex is an exhaustive how-to guide for the reading instruction method they've developed called Phono-Graphix. Phonics and whole language take a beating here, with the authors accusing both methods of failing generations of would-be readers. Their approach, unabashedly touted as far superior, stresses the 43 sounds of the English language, treating letters as symbols of these sounds. Phono-Graphix teaches children to separate each phoneme in a word so that the phonemes can later be blended back in the right order. If this sounds familiar it's because the same method was heralded in 1997 in the well-publicized book Why Our Children Can't Read, by psychologist Diane McGuinness (Geoffrey's mother).

Parents may find the first long chapter on the history and process of learning how to read a bit tedious and technical. But since each chapter--and the method--builds on these thoughts, it's a must to read the book from cover to cover. Harder still is accepting the McGuinnesses' claim that Phono-Graphix has a 100 percent success rate. Much of the research cited in their book seems to have been conducted by the authors themselves, with no indication of comparison groups or follow-up studies. Still, numerous schools throughout the country and in England have adopted the method. And the McGuinnesses' tone of alarm may ring true for some parents frustrated with their children's struggles to read. Phono-Graphix represents a new alternative where none existed before. Reading Reflex is overrated

When my oldest child was 8, I was homeschooling and heard such rave reviews about Reading Reflex. I rushed out and bought the book. I was so sure this would be the cure all for his reading struggles. The authors of this book and their website make it out like all children who struggle with reading struggle because they haven't had proper instruction, or have been taught incorrectly. I spent a year and a half using their program, following it to the tee. I made sure my son didn't use letter names and we didn't teach any phonics rules, just Reading Reflex. I expected great progress. After a year and a half I still had a child that could not read, write, or spell. I soon sent my child back to school to the "experts". Flash forward to now and I am homeschooling again with a child who still struggles extremely with reading, writing, and spelling. After years of guilt, feeling like I failed my son because I must have been doing something wrong with their wonderful, perfect program, I have finally realized that learning disabled children have massive difficulties learning to read no matter which program they use.

Reading Reflex makes their book out to be a cure all. Their reading program, actually does a wonderful job teaching spelling. For example, they teach all the ways to make the "A" sound (like in cake). What they don't do, because they are insistent on not using letters, is teach all the sounds that the letter "A" makes. Because Reading Reflex insists teaching phonics doesn't work, they don't teach any of the rules of phonics that help with dividing syllables and when to use which sound. I have finally resorted to making my own program for my son using flashcards (another thing Reading Reflex insists doesn't work) and supplementary materials that I have purchased from Educators Publishing Services. We have seen some great progress, but I also know now that these types of learning disabilities take YEARS to overcome and lots and lots of love and patience. You aren't going to find that in a book.

A Remarkable Success Story--Thanks to This Book

In early March, before I found "Reading Reflex" by chance on an amazon.com search, my 6-1/2-year old daughter's reading skills were barely on grade level according to her school records. She often struggled through attempts to read fairly simple but unfamiliar words, frequently inserting sounds that were not there or switching the letter sequences. Because sounding out words took such effort, she often resorted to a guessing strategy that, not surprisingly, failed her frequently. She was starting to become discouraged, and at times I wondered if formal testing and tutoring was needed.
In late April, seven weeks after we started the "Phono-Graphix" lessons in "Reading Reflex," a standardized test showed that my first-grader could now decode unfamiliar words at the level of a third grader. I knew from my own observations that she was doing very well, but this confirmation was stunning. Her leap in abilities came about because "Reading Reflex" gave me the background knowledge, evaluation materials, and activities to create a concentrated, highly successful "catch-up" program for her. My goal was to help her to get solidly on grade level, but this was successful beyond anything I could imagine.
For six weeks, my daughter and I worked together at about twice the pace suggested in the book. We did about three to four 40-60-minute lessons a week (instead of two lessons). Each lesson included about 20-30 minutes of Phono-Graphix activities followed by 20-30 minutes in which she read poems or a story aloud, during which I corrected her as needed using the quick, instructive techniques from the book. It is not necessary or probably desirable to work with most children at this rate, but my daughter needed to catch up and was willing, motivated, and doing beautifully--plus I was able to make the time for extra lesson planning--so we proceeded. Now we do a lesson only occasionally but try to read together daily to keep her skills up.
Although my daughter is a bright child with strong story analysis skills who loves books--and has had many thousands read to her--cracking the written code did not come easily to her (before Phono-Graphix). Last fall, when I became concerned about her struggles, I learned that this problem is common. According to information I got from a leading research agency, most children "pick up" reading regardless of how they are taught, but some 20%, regardless of how intelligent they are, need systematic, explicit instruction in decoding to fully develop as readers.
I tried a number of other approaches before finding "Reading Reflex." I assumed that "explicit instruction" in decoding was phonics instruction, so I tried some software programs, electronic phonics toys, and a popular mail-order program, with varying results--none of them remarkable.
When I finally found "Reading Reflex" in early March, it was clear, from its emphasis on "phonemic awareness" and the logical nature of our written code, that this was what I had been looking for all along. After spending five months and a few hundred dollars on less effective materials, I found that the recommendations from 20+ years of research were wrapped up in a single book aimed at parents. I could hardly believe it.
The introductory chapters of "Reading Reflex" de-mystified the reading process for me. It took about a week for some of the concepts to sink in, as this approach, though entirely logical (even brilliant), is very different from the traditional phonics approach I had been taught many years ago and was using to help my daughter. I needed to re-wire my thinking quite a bit.
Unlike phonics, with Phono-Graphix there are no memorization drills, no confusing "rules" (with their many exceptions), and no work on sounds unless within the context of a word. The skills development activities are brief, varied, and often use manipulatives (sliding letters on a dry-erase board or desk), so it was a heck of a lot more interesting for my daughter than, say, phonics flash cards.
My daughter grasped the concepts readily and her skills developed rapidly. As she became adept at isolating and manipulating sounds in words--two areas of initial weakness that I could identify using the tests in the book--her reading improved in leaps, as did her confidence level. Soon, instead of just asking me to read to her, she began to ask, "Can I read YOU a book?" And when she did, she no longer needed to rely on guessing strategies. She was gaining the skills and knowledge to carefully tackle just about every word she encountered.
As my daughter grew as a reader, I developed as her teacher. "Reading Reflex" taught me how to conduct the lessons and correct mistakes. I gained many additional, invaluable tips from the book's online bulletin board ([...] on which the authors and other representatives of their program converse with teachers, parents, and tutors. Online I was lucky to find a local certified Phono-Graphix trainer who offered a workshop for parents, which added to my teaching and lesson planning skills.
I have only two small criticisms of the book. One is that it does not provide an at-a-glance road map of the lessons which I, as a visual thinker, needed to avoid confusion. I easily remedied this by making an outline of the sequence of activities in the most complicated and important section (chapter 5). The other is that the few stories and illustrations are not appealing, although my daughter and I came to look upon them with humor. This was not a problem. I simply sought appropriate, engaging stories and poems from the library that reinforced the lessons (the book's web site had many suggestions).
I wish to extend my deep, heartfelt thanks to the developers of Phono-Graphix and authors of the "Reading Reflex," Carmen and Goeff McGuinness, and to the Phono-Graphix certified therapist who held the parent workshop, Kim Bacon. They empowered me to help my daughter in a fast and effective way, which has made all the difference

New Paperback Essentially Identical to Hardback

I entered the May 12 review, below, and just wanted Amazon.com readers to know that, although a notation was added that says "this text refers to out of print or unavailable edition," this new paperback is essentially identical to the spiral-bound version I reviewed. It's an excellent program for struggling readers, and the only product I found on the market that has ALL of these features: It (1) is based on decades of research on reading; (2) targets critical reading skills (phonemic awareness skills) AND knowledge of sound-letter correspondences (often called phonics knowledge); (3) provides quick diagnostic tests for initial and ongoing evaluations; (4) is designed for fast results; (5) offers on-line support; and (6) is used by professionals but is also packaged in a book for parents. Most importantly, it works--and quickly--as evidenced not just by my success story reported below, but also by the authors' published research and countless stories posted their internet bulletin board from teachers, parents, and tutors here and in the U.K.

Arthur Miller's Tragic Denial

This was going to be a 5-star review. But I have learned this week while reading "Timebends" for the first time -- twenty years after its first publication -- that Arthur Miller and his third wife, Inge Morath, had a son, Daniel, who was born with Down syndrome in 1966. Daniel's name does not appear in the text or index of "Timebends." According to an article in the September 2007 issue of Vanity Fair, Miller had Daniel banished to a state institution almost immediately after birth, and that he thereafter completely excised Daniel from his life. It's heartbreaking. According to Vanity Fair, Daniel, who is now 41, is relatively high-functioning and a very happy, content and spirited person. But when Daniel's mother, Inge, (who was well-known in her own right as a photographer) died in 2002 and the New York Times called Miller for information about his family, he again omitted the name of his youngest son. Inge visited Daniel regularly until her death, and celebrated holidays with him. I wonder how much friction her refusal to simply throw him away caused in the Miller household? Not enough to divide the couple, it seems. They were married 40 years.

In my view, to have denied his son's existence is an unforgivable blind spot for an artist so widely revered and admired for his empathy and his brave stances as a moral force for justice and compassion. As the VF article points out, shame, selfishness and fear could all have been motivators for Arthur Miller's decision. Still, after reading more than 500 pages of musings and meditations by a truly masterful writer -- a man all too aware of his own humanity; both of his talents and his limitations, I feel betrayed.

Much of "Timebends" just drips with elegant prose; Miller spins elegiac meditations on life during the Depression, his first exposure to unfair labor practices on New York city docks and the difficulties he always had writing (the gestation period for his plays was sometimes years). He humbly describes his refusal to "name names" during the 1950s Red Scare, and tells of the pain he felt at having to sever his friendship with director Elia Kazan for many years for having given the House Un-American Activities Committee everything it wanted.

If his first marriage and children never seem to elbow their way to the forefront of Miller's monologue, it's because he devotes so much time to describing the American theater in one of its Golden Ages -- the late 1940s and early 1950s. Miller seems to have known everyone -- not only in the theater but in all realms of arts and letters and politics, but he never sounds like he's name-dropping. And he wisely uses restraint in describing his works in full and in quoting shamelessly from their reviews. Miller also bites his tongue while discussing the failed and rancorous attempts to bring about a National Theater in the 1960s.

And then we come to the chapters everyone was dying to read when the book first came out -- the chapters on Marilyn Monroe. Miller had never spoken publicly about her before "Timebends" was first published in 1987. I don't doubt for an instant that he truly loved Marilyn, nor she him. Hers was obviously an extraordinarily appealing personality, and her beauty allowed him to forgive her neediness and desperation for respect and love for many years. Miller says she was never happier than when they went to visit his parents in New York. There Marilyn was treated like an ordinary daughter-in-law, and she loved it. Miller notes her native intelligence -- which was tremendous -- and her desperate sadness and endless quest for normalcy. He met her in 1951, before she became bigger than life, and he followed her trajectory almost all the way to the bottom. They were married for five years, from 1956-1961. In 1960, making the film "The Misfits," which Miller wrote expressly for Monroe, nearly killed them both. This is a fascinating portrait of Marilyn which was shrouded until Miller decided to unveil it. It's the eulogy he never got to deliver. It's beautiful, tender, and rueful, speaking as it does of untold grief on both their parts. It seems as though Miller regretted to the end of his days his inability to save Marilyn, although there were many others who found they were not up to the task, either.

Tragically, after the heroic efforts to save Marilyn from herself, Miller's well ran dry, and there seems to have been no more compassion or sensitivity to show to his own son. Miller married Inge Morath in 1962, a few months before Marilyn died. Morath was a photographer from Magnum Photos sent out to capture pictures on the set of "The Misfits." Miller and Morath remained married until her death in 2002, fifteen years after "Timebends" ends. And frankly, I got no further than their marriage and birth of daughter Rebecca once I learned of the missing son of Arthur Miller. As Miller did to Daniel, so I, too, turned away from the rest of what had been the story of a deeply compelling and moving life.

Tedious and Disappointing

For such a well regarded playwright, I found the writing tedious. Miller's comments on the times added nothing that one familiar with the post-WWI period would not already know.

I had hoped to learn more about the author's character and inner thoughts, but was disappointed. At times, what came across as irrelevant commentary or details seemed intended almost to obscure rather than reveal.

By 50 pages, I was exasperated and starting to skim, shaking my head in wonderment at those with the patience to wade through all 600 pages of this.

About the only interesting parts were Miller's comments on his plays and some of their underlying themes or motivations.

Starred Review. If ever a book was brought to life by a reading, it is this presentation of O'Brien's posthumously published classic. Norton individually crafts voices and personalities for each character in such a way that a listener might imagine an entire cast of voice talent working overtime. This is a comic/surreal tale of a one-legged gentleman farmer who participates in a poorly planned botched robbery-turned-murder, only to find himself having a long conversation with the dead man shortly after the deed. In addition he hears from his own soul, who he names Joe. Joe's voice is that of a wry observer with a voice of calm, removed authority, whereas dead man Mathers' voice is completely nasal, at once sickly and droll. Mathers sends the farmer to a two-dimensional barracks of three metaphysical policemen. Here he finds himself in a world where people can become bicycles and eternity is within walking distance. Norton's rendition of the main policeman, Sergeant Pluck, tips the reading into a full-out performance. The enormous blustery fellow with red cheeks and brushy mustache and eyebrows is portrayed like a jolly yet dangerous Disney walrus. Norton's Irish brogue, accentuated to different degrees with the various characters, ties the ribbon on a perfect presentation of this absurd and chilling masterpiece. (Apr.)

O'Brien is just WEIRD!!! and that's a good thing.

Flann O'Brien isn't for everyone. There are quite a few one star ratings (and I'm sure those people would have rather given it a zero if they could), but I think that's a good thing. Here's why. O'Brien is just weird, bizarre, and perhaps the most "out there" writer I have ever read. Your classic drug trip books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "On the Road" have nothing on this guy. If you aren't paying attention to every little detail in the writing then you just aren't going to get it. With that being said, some people are just too dense to get his prose. This is a novelist I want people to hate, because honestly he's my guy...I don't want you to get it.

"The Third Policeman" didn't immerse the reader into O'Brien's unique and bizarre writing style immediately. In fact that was one of the the things about this novel that I found interesting. I thought I was reading gothic literature like Hawthorne, or Brockden Brown at first. It wasn't until the first twenty pages that O'Brien introduces you to the bizarre world in which you will inhabit for the remainder of the novel. There are certain aspects of this novel that I didn't enjoy as much as his first novel, "At Swim Two Birds," but I thought this novel didn't have as many nonsensical moments that dragged on for too long. All in all, this is a great read. This was his second novel, which became his last since it wasn't published until after his death, and it is only the second novel of his I have read. I can't wait to read the rest of them!

Is it about a bicycle?

Yes, and how people turn into bicycles and vice-versa. It's impossible to categorize this wonderful novel. It combines elements of fantasy, magic realism, horror, humor, satire, and it could only have been written by an Irishman. Finished in 1940 but not published until 1967, a year after the author's death, the main text concerns the adventures of a man who commits a robbery and murder in rural Ireland, but following this, bizarre and impossible things occur when he is captured by two peculiar policemen and imprisoned in a peculiar police station. A series of long footnotes parallel the text, detailing the protagonist's obsession with the absurd physicist De Selby and his crackpot ideas. (This device is copied by Robert Anton Wilson in his Historical Illuminatus Chronicles, and possibly by Nabokov in Pale Fire, though it seems unlikely Nabokov had read the manuscript of the then-unpublished Third Policeman.) Another device, of separating the protagonist into two separate characters who then converse with each other, may have been copied by Phillip K. Dick in his equally strange novel Valis.
The only other writer I know who measures up to this standard of originality, humor and strangeness, is the late, great, R. A. Lafferty. Read this book. Then read it again.

Fall Off Your Chair Hilarious Satire

Oh come on--don't tell me you've never read Flann O'Brien? Inimitable pen name of Brian O'Nolan (go figure), the inimitable humorist for the Dublin newspaper and novelist who wrote both in Gaelic and English? You've never heard of Dalkey Archive Press in Illinois--which is named for another one of O'Brien's unique novels (The Dalkey Archive, that is)? And then again, have you read Ulysses, where before or after the library scene (representing the passage by Charybdis and Scylla, I believe)Stephen Daedalus is crossing the square in downtown Dublin and notes that he sees the newspaperman in seedy suit or some such, who is in fact Brian O'Nolan, a contemporary of Joyce's? Well...I highly recommend that you start with THE THIRD POLICEMAN, which in spite of being a translation from the original in Gaelic has to be one of the funniest books ever written in any language. I can't begin to describe it because it is in a genre of its own, something like Gothic-Fantasy-Satirical-Irish Black Humor-Twainian-Humbuggerist-Social Commentary. Some years ago when I was working on some short book reviews for a bookstore newsletter (and that is another long story better left out here), I discovered that my colleague at the time, Doug, had never read THE THIRD POLICEMAN. I immediately secured a copy and vowed that we needed to review the Dalkey Archives Press reprint of the novel IMMEDIATELY! And so the intrepid Doug picked it up and started reading the first chapter while I was typing some other rubbish on a computer. In (approximately) 10 minutes time, he started laughing, and he continued laughing until he was laughing so hard that he fell off the wooden chair he was sitting on and literally rolled on the floor. Now, you may consider this story apocryphal or even inconsequential. But I just wish to declare here, publicly, that that is the only time I have ever seen anyone fulfill that crusty cliche--that I laughed so hard I fell off my chair. Doug could have injured himself, and in fact, he ended up gasping for air and nearly asphyxiating himself over Flann O'Brien. So that's all I'm going to say about this here, except to add that every reader aged 12 years or older (and the occasional brilliant toddler, too) must read Flann O'Brien to expand his or her mental boundaries and contribute to their elasticity. But caveat emptor--don't sit on a bar stool or any seat that is too slippery when you read him. And above all, don't read him near any steep drop offs like a ravine or riverbank, much less while climbing the Matterhorn or Mt. Whitney with spikes and pulleys and all that gear, or visiting the Grand Canyon.

The authors trace the career of Buddy Holly, the West Texas rock 'n' roller in great detailhis youth in Lubbock, early performances, the formation of his group the Crickets, the fame that followed the hit song "That'll Be the Day" (based on a line spoken by John Wayne in The Searchers) and the plane crash that killed him in 1959. Holly's "hold on his fans is to be explained by his very humanity," the authors maintain, and, appropriately, they take pains to separate fact from legend. The book concludes with a look at the current "Holly Renaissance." A superb collection of 160 illustrations (photos, maps, clippings, ads, etc.) is spoiled in part because they are reproduced in miniature to fit within the pages' outer margins. Nevertheless, this is indeed the "definitive biography," based on years of obsessive research, including 22,000 miles on the road logged by Goldrosen while interviewing friends and acquaintances of Holly. This is, hands down, the best biography of Buddy Holly available. I have read them all and though others have their moments (mainly rare photos) they are spoiled with proven factual errors and unsubstantiated rumors. John Goldrosen's book is the standard by which all others are judged.

Goldrosen is a stickler for accuracy and his research is meticulous. He also keeps close to all things Buddy Holly. I first met him at the dedication of the Buddy Holly statue in Lubbock in 1986. Bill Griggs (founder of the sadly discontinued Buddy Holly Memorical Society) thinks highly of Goldrosen and there is no higher compliment for a historian of Buddy Holly.

The updates keep making the book better (and more accurate) but I will always keep my first copy which I've had signed by Buddy's parents, his brothers, Jerry Allison, Niki Sullivan, Joe Mauldin, and, of course, the author John Goldrosen. If you only read one biography of Buddy Holly, this should be the one. If you have read others and would like to know what Buddy was really like, get the latest edition of this book. You will not be disappointed.

Update 2005: Sad to note that this book is out of print. So is the earlier version titled "The Buddy Holly Story" by the same authors. It's still worth reading if you can find a copy. Check your local library or used book store. Hopefully another publisher will pick up the book and it will be available again.

The best biography of Buddy...and best balanced...

I've been a fan of Buddy's since he was still alive. This is the best biography available. The authors do not deal in sensationalism and wacko explorations of Buddy's sex life or possible contributions to the crash of the plane. He died at 22, and was only famous for two years, and never was wealthy. He can be expected to have had moments of immaturity, and to have made mistakes in judgement. But the overwhelming evidence is that he was a nice, normal young adult with abnormal talent for singing, songwriting, guitar-playing and record-producing. He's been gone for more than 40 years, and he left about 80 recordings behind. Those performances are still wonderful, and this book tells you a lot about how they were created and captured and preserved. Who needs anything else?

Still the definitive Buddy Holly biography

This is a detailed and complete biography of Buddy Holly's life and career. It is accurate and has a good index. The more recent Ellis Amburn biography has an impressive bibliography, but unfortunately numerous errors have been found in it. This makes the Amburn book useless as a reference as the reader cannot trust it. Not so with the Goldrosen and Beecher book: it is accurate and is still the definitive reference for Buddy Holly fans. I strongly recommend the Goldrosen and Beecher book over the other more recent biographies for its completeness, accuracy and ease of use. If you want to own only one book about Buddy Holly, this is the one to get.

Favorite Version of the Bible

This is my favorite Bible. It's in plain English, no thees and thous, and I really appreciate that; makes for a better read and a clearer understanding. I love this version. My original was 37 years old and falling apart so I was super lucky to find a copy of this on Amazon. It was in really nice condition at a super reasonable price.
