An Ivory Tower

Book three, book three... and not even in Paris yet. While I was waiting for this one to arrive, I reread the other two. Despite having read them on Alison Tyler's blog in the noughties, and maybe twice since getting them, I can still reread them with fresh eyes, see something new in each re-view. I wonder how many times I'll read them in all?

My greatest complaint about this collection is that they're not each 600 pages long. I could read this story forever. It kills me to think of all the bits that have been edited out. It's a crying shame, really.
Ok, they're perfectly formed and beautiful little slices of kinky loveliness, but I'd rather they were three times the length.

I think this one is meant to work as a peek into the life of a 24/7 BDSM relationship. Alison Tyler is wonderfully good at giving snapshots and diary entries of her memories with startling clarity and emotional honesty. The book also provides us with accompanying snippets her psyche, the uncertainty and excitement that her character Sam lived with. There is both the sense of heady dream come true and immense challenge in the life she both falls into and embraces. For the less adventurous reader, it's eye-opening, achingly titillating, shocking and wonderful.

Aspects of the story send me stepping out of the magic momentarily - like in the last book where Alex reveals that Jack had told him to shave her head if she'd refused the haircut. That would have been kinda traumatic. In this book, there are moments too that seem overwhelming for the character, but the fairytale nature of the relationship continues, with revelations abounding in the penthouse tower they inhabit, high above the real world.

I want to know what happened In The End on one level, but I really don't want the story to end, either.

Erotica, love story or psychological thriller... You decide

Wrapped Around Your Finger, the third novel in Alison Tyler's series of semi-autobiographical stories, leads the reader further along Sam's immersion into her submissive lifestyle.

It takes off from where The Delicious Torment ended, with the promise of a trip to Paris awaiting Sam. The majority of the book takes place over only seven days. Seven days which Jack has mapped out for Sam with a draftsman's precision, each scenario and encounter planned to the nth degree. Seven days of sex and spankings, seven days of physical pain and emotional torment. Seven days of love.

The love is what stands out for me in Wrapped Around Your Finger. I got it. I understood it, and for the first time EVER in a BDSM book, I could feel the love Jack has for Sam as a thing in itself. In the Delicious Torment the focus for me as a reader was lust, pleasure, and the delight in giving pain. In Wrapped Around Your Finger this has transmuted into a very real love. To me, this was a love story first, and an erotica book second.

No, I'm revising that.

Wrapped Around Your Finger is a psychological thriller first, a love story second, and erotica third.
That's a strange thing to say about a book that is (deservedly) marketed as erotica and is saturated with sex. This book is solid, wall to wall sex. If you're wanting an incredibly hot one-handed read, well you've got it. But I think you're missing a lot if that's all you're after. The mind fuckery, the knife edge of torment and desire. Alison Tyler dives deep into headspace, into the minutiae of Sam's relationship with Jack (and Alex), into the self-doubt and wonderment and what-ifs and analysis. That, for me, put this book up there with those heart-palpitating exquisitely agonising thrillers that you Just. Can't. Put. Down.

I'm starting to flail. I find it hard to articulate why this book, this series, has such a hold over me. But it does.

While you absolutely must read DARK SECRET LOVE and THE DELICIOUS TORMENT first to fully enjoy the story arc and developments, WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER ups the ante in every respect. Even if you're not a BDSM devotee, the honest and unpredictable narrative is very refreshing and engaging to read. While I definitely sympathize (and agree!) with Jo's review remarks about wanting more, I actually find the length of these installments to be ideal: they keep the intensity ramped up throughout without seeming unbelievable or over-the-top the way some BDSM sagas do. Tyler proves herself a master of restraint...kind of fitting, no?

Light, fluffy, contemporary

The Truth about Jack was the first great contemporary read of the year that I really enjoyed. The plot, writing, and the characters just really bring together the story.
First off the plot. I went into this book expecting a cute contemporary. I definitely got that. Jack is a boy who finds a message in a bottle from the main girl Dakota who is going through a tough time. Jack decides to lie about who he truly is to get to know Dakota. Both Jack and Dakota are characters I came to love, Jack especially. Jack is a down to Earth musician, a guy I would definitely go for. What I truly love about his character was how honest he was with himself. He realizes falling with a girl after first laying eyes on her is creepy. He isn’t afraid to let his feelings show. That is so rare in a guy which made me appreciate him even more. I definitely enjoyed chapters with his perspective more than Dakota, who nevertheless I still enjoyed. The plot in general was very cutesy. There were a few moments when things got a little dark, but those moments were still nice to read. I knew going in what direction the plot would go and the endgame, but the moments in between still made it good.
Don’t even get me started on this writing. From the very first page of the story I fell in love with the writing. There was something about it that just drew me in. The writing is simple yet elegant, the perfect combination. The writing style was perfect for this type of contemporary.

Cute cover with a light-hearted feel. Synopsis reads like a typical YA/NA feel-good drama.
Looking Deeper:
First-person alternating POV in present tense. Dakota grew up in an artist/ hippie community. She's vibrant, caring and not as naive as one would imagine her to be. Jack comes from money. His mother shelters and represses him due to a past tragedy she'd never gotten over. Both characters are young, barely old enough to start college in the fall, but he's already lost his best friend to suicide and she's suffered the ultimate betrayal from her boyfriend and best friend.
Dakota composes a message in a bottle and tosses into the ocean, only unbeknownst to her, it is found only moments later by Jack. Jack first caught sight of Dakota earlier that day and was immediately drawn to her. When he spots her bottle churning in the tide, he takes it as fate. However, he replies to her message under false pretenses and begins a pen pal-ship that is based only on half-truths. Now he needs to figure out how to transition from his pen pal character to the real Jack without ruining everything.
The characters are young. They both have some maturing and learning to do, especially Jack - but I blame a lot of that on his mother, too. There are several secondary characters in this story, all which seem to benefit the plot in one way or another without threatening to steal the spotlight. There's a natural and easy way about the dialogue and interaction that was nice, even the intentional awkwardness was conveyed well. While the plot progresses slow and steady, the writing style is fluid and easy to read. There were a handful of conflicts that were resolved in timely and age-appropriate manners. Predictability was low. The conclusion included a solid epilogue that added to the story nicely. Overall, a it was a fun, light read catering more to the teen and young adult crowd.

Her Young Adult novels include The Truth About Jack, Audrey's Guide to Black Magic, Audrey's Guide to Witchcraft, Babe in Boyland, Confessions of a Triple Shot Betty, and Triple Shot Bettys in Love. Babe in Boyland was optioned by the Disney Channel and won the International Reading Association's Teen Choice Award. Her adult novels are Bombshell, Notes from the Backseat, Tart, and Summer in the Land of Skin. Her plays have been produced in Ashland, New York, San Francisco, Chicago and L.A. She and her partner David Wolf won the New Generation Playwrights Award for their one-act, Jake Savage, Jungle P.I. She is a professor of English and Communication Studies at Mendocino College.

Love Jody Gehrman, love this book!

The Truth About Jack is the latest from Jody Gehrman, author of the Audrey's Guide books. It is told from the altering points of view of Jack and Dakota, two teenagers with very different voices.

The author is great at creating complex characters, characters with their own stories and issues and little quirks. There were many moments that a character behaved in a somewhat questionable way, but there were other moments in the history of the character that would ecplain it, turing the questionable behavior into something more sympathetic.

Jack's character is the epitome of this. There were moments when he came off as more than a little obsessive, a little stalkerish, a little to instalove. But, in reality, he was a bit on the dysfunctional side. He had had some issues with his family, with school, with life, and it left him isolated and insecure. There were times when I just couldn't get behind him as a character... until something was said that reminded me of the things he had been through. Then everything fell into place and I just wanted to hug him and root for him. Dakota, too, had been through her own fair share of drama recently and was just as scarred as Jack, albeit in a different way. She had been betrayed and it left her with trust issues that aren't helped along by more lies.

Dakota and Jack are such completely different characters, from totally opposite ends of the spectrum. He is privleged and sheltered, while she grew up in an artists' colony with much more freedom than most. The one thing they share is a love of creativity, Jack in music and Dakota in art. The altering points of view really underscored the differences, and the similarities, between them. I don't think that the story just couldn't have been told nearly as effectively with any other form of narration.

My Recommendation: This is a book that had happy moments, sad moments, funny moments, and even some creepy moments. But what made it a good read were Jack and Dakota, two very different characters that were richly created. Definitely a recommend!

Instructions For A New Life Is on Point!

This book is up there with all the other metaphysical, motivational and inspirational works of arts by Deepak Chopra, Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer, Harv Eker, The Hiphoppreacher, Les Brown, Anthony De Mello, Oprah Winfrey, Jewel Diamond Taylor, and many more.

I like it because Markus is frank and to the point. He has taken out the fluff, fillers, and binders and has gotten to the core nitty-gritty to the secret of a successful living in the here and now...no sugar-coating...so candid a lot of people aren't going to want to hear it...

It is such a great humorous read that I have my fourteen year old son read it before he let's his hormones take control :)

Well, either do the work now or later but effectually you will have to do the work...you can get over on man but you can not get over on the Universe!

I Highly recommended this book and other works by Markus for people who want to have it all!!!: the best of health, wealth, relationship and spirit....You will learn to laugh, live and love...

Being a Better Learner

I think that this book potentially has a lot of value to offer to the reader. I came to it as someone who's going to be taking some fairly high level math/science courses in the near future, and I've been working on refreshing my mind on the subject matter and updating some of my thoughts on study techniques in hopes of making the transition a smooth one. I've been looking at a lot of materials for this, and also for some other learning-related projects I've done over the past year.

Because of that background, a fair bit of what came up in this book was familiar. Some of the historical anecdotes have popped up in other books, like Moonwalking With Einstein. The author really isn't pretending to have invented everything she's talking about, because she makes reference to research results and has endnotes leading to more information. I don't think that this takes away all of the value of the book, though, because it's a compilation of bits of information you could otherwise gather in many different places. Basically, you're spending a few dollars to have someone sum it and try to put it into a sensible order for you.

I think the target market here includes fairly sophisticated high school students, but it's overall more suitable for adults who are already reasonably educated. The author is currently running a free course (there's a paid certificate, but that's optional) through Coursera called "Learning How to Learn" where it basically says that the book and course were designed to go together. That seems about right to me, because most of the people who participate in Coursera courses regularly are those who have at least some college background.

My feeling is that there's enough value in here to quite easily justify buying and reading it. Considering how many hours a week go into a student's courseload, and how much money is involved, if something in here clicks for you and works, it'll quite easily give you the boost in saved time and performance to justify what you put into it. Even as someone who is already familiar with quite a bit of what's in here, it's nice to have it in one place so that I can easily go back later to glance back at the ideas proposed, and to refine my studying approach over time to try to do better.

I've only had the book a very brief time, because its only just been released. Obviously that time frame is too short to be able to make any wild claims about it vastly changing my grades or something. I am happy that I got it, though, and I'm intending to follow along with the Coursera class as well. Excellent book, and not limited to Math/Science

As education devolves from teaching the three R's to the three P's (Political-Pedantic-Proctoring), this book is a must have. Transition from elementary/middle school education to high school is not easy for some. Part of the problem is the change from recitation to critical thinking isn't taught. Those that have an innate talent go forward, those that can't are mostly left behind.
I have purchased three copies of this book, for each of my children, to help them make a smooth transition to college life as it approaches (also as an inoculant). Highly recommended to women and girls who developed a mental block for math and science in high school or college.

Dr. Oakley does a masterful job in introducing the science of learning to readers in a way that is very engaging, practical, infectious and liberating. Her work provided me with a functional "User's Manual" to this magnificent gift that I have called my brain. For years I operated under the cloud of misconception regarding my own learning abilities causing me to shy away from many subjects/careers because I thought I was just not good enough. Now, I realize those moments of "confusion" or what appeared to be my inability to grasp a subject, was a result of my uninformed approach to learning and my lack of understanding in how my brain actually processes information (i.e. focused / diffused mode of thinking, chunking and top-down thinking etc..). "A Mind for Numbers" has given me a renewed passion for learning and released my pent up thirst for knowledge and self-actualization. I highly recommend Dr. Oakley's book. It "empowers ordinary people to do extraordinary things" through the power and gift of learning!!!

This time I am reviewing Christopher Hart book; Figure It Out! Human Proportions. In comparison to his other book, Figure It Out! Beginners Guide To Drawing People, this book goes a bit more in depth. It shows not only the proportions of the body, but the head, hands and feet as well. It is clear and easy to follow. It's not only a great book for those who wanna draw realism/semi-realism but those who draw Manga/Anime and Cartooning as well. I give this book 5 stars. So when you can, please pick up a copy, you wont be disappointed.

Simple to understand, but explains and illustrates very well.

I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to understand how to properly draw the human body. It is extra beneficial if one has a basic idea of human anatomy, as this book helps continue that understanding. But even if one does not know much about how the human body fits together, this book explains how it works without being too technical. The tips included are very helpful to anyone looking to improve their drawing style.

This is one of the best books for learning human body proportions. The illustrations are clear and easy to understand. I used this text to assist in sculpting the human form. I can attest that without this text my efforts would have taken considerably more time and effort.

One of the Greatest books about medieval shoes on the market

The tower of London Press has never dissapointed me, and this book is no exception. Having done quite a bit of research on clothing artifacts, I can tell you that this book is excellent. The book contains quality pictures of shoes spanning the periods for anyone into such groups as the SCA, Renfaires, IFGS, and many other historical recreation groups. One of the best features of this text is that there are generally three views of each shoe. The first is the photograph of the actual item. The second is a drawing of the item, with any parts that time may have removed added back in. The third, and most unique that I've come across, is a picture of the pieces of the shoe flattened. This flattened view lets you make your own truly medieval shoes with a few simple measurements and pretty basic tools. Some knowledge of leatherwork is helpful. I also found it useful to understand how to utilise a sock-pattern for making a shoe. This book is an excellent reference for the shoe enthusiast from the level of the beginner all the way up to the seasoned expert.

The correct title of this book is 'Shoes and Pattens' and it's available at Amazon. A patten is a wooden base worn with a shoe to protect the shoe from mud and yuck. The book 'Shoes and Pattens' does contain patterns.

About the Book

This book begins with the fundamentals of remote sensing and GIS. As readers go through the chapters of this book, they will learn how remote sensing and GIS can be applied for studying the land, sea, air, and biotic communities that comprise our planet's environment.

The first part of this book describes the role of space science and technology for using remote sensing to monitor planetary bodies; while the second part demonstrates the role of information technology to monitor and to manage earth resources by means of GIS. Not only will readers gain an insight into the applications of remote sensing imagery, they will also develop skills in interpreting these visual displays and data sets by direct inspection and by computer processing. This book provides a clear idea of how remote sensing and GIS can be used to analyse the data and to solve complex management problems. Students will also be able to apply this newly acquired knowledge by doing their own analysis using the software provided in the CD accompanying the book.

Each chapter in the book commences with an introduction, which briefly outlines the topics covered in the chapter, and ends with exercises which help the students to assess their comprehension of the subject matter studied in the chapter. The chapters also contain numerous black and white and colour illustrations that complement the text.

This part concentrates principally upon Indian remote sensing satellites, LANDSAT, and where appropriate on SPOT, but also draws upon a variety of sensors operating from land and sea satellites launched by various government and private industries. Most of these observe in the visible, reflective infrared and microwave spectral intervals, but images from several thermal systems are also included as examples of common space data sets. Part 2 comprises Chapters 13 through 20 that explain the basics of GIS, spatial and attribute data model, the process of GIS, analysis of geospatial data, planning/implementation/management of GIS and the modern trends of GIS.

The chapterwise details of the text are as follows:

Chapter 1 covers the basic concepts of remote sensing, brief outline of remote sensing process and fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation. Chapter 2 provides an in-depth explanation of sensor resolutions, geometry, and orbital characteristics.  Chapter 3 talks about the developmental history of remote sensing and the Indian space program. Chapter 4 deals with the photographic imaging techniques and allied matters such as camera, filter, and film.  Chapter 5 describes digital imaging techniques in the ultraviolet through infrared region of electromagnetic spectrum with detail of related sensors.  Chapter 6 introduces microwave remote sensing and related matters.  Chapter 7 describes ground truth data and GPS in detail.  Chapter 8 discusses principles of modern photogrammetric techniques in detail. Chapters  9, 10 and 11 deal with visual and computer based analysis techniques of optical, thermal, and microwave remote sensing products combined with ancillary data.  Chapter 12 describes the applications of remote sensing. It has been tried to accomplish this by presenting a very large number of remote sensing products as images which are described in a running text that explains their characteristics and utility.

Chapters 13 and 14 describe the basic concepts of GIS, its functions and advantages over other systems like CADD, conventional DBMS, AM/FM, or other mapping systems.  Chapter 15 covers spatial data model in detail. Chapter 16 provides a clear understanding of attribute data model and its management with a detailed discussion on metadata. Chapter 17 sketches the entire process to be followed to prepare a GIS. Chapter 18 covers some geospatial analysis techniques in a very structured manner with appropriate examples and illustrations. Chapter 19 explains how to plan, implement, and manage GI systems. Chapter 20 highlights the modern and future trends of GIS which will essentially impress upon the reader the power and reach of geospatial technology.

Appendices are given at the end of the book. Appendix A focuses on the basic concepts of map, coordinate system, and projection. Appendix B comprises the mathematical topics required to understand digital image processing. These will help the beginners to understand geospatial technology better.

A very rich glossary and bibliography at the end are for the benefit of the students.

Basudeb Bhatta is currently a course coordinator in the Computer Aided Design Centre of Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He has more than 15 years of industrial, teaching, and research experience in remote sensing, GNSS, and GIS. He has authored many research papers and articles in various journals and magazines. He has also authored several textbooks and monographs on remote sensing, GIS, GNSS, and CAD. He has also been instrumental in initiating a large number of courses on remote sensing, GIS, and GNSS to promote geoinformatics technology.

A Thorough Compendium

The first page should read: "DON'T PANIC!" It is a very thorough overview of every type and mode of remote sensing ever developed for mapping out the world as it is. In my own class we are not even using a third of what's in this book. Much of the stuff,(I would venture to say), one would never encounter in their career as a GIS technician. It is and shall remain for some time, a good reference for those intending to get their Masters or Doctorate's degrees in GIS. So, I say, if you're like me and using it for a 200 level college course, "DON'T PANIC!"

About the Author
Lillian Smith (1897 - 1966) was a novelist, essayist, and one of the first prominent white southerners to denounce racial segregation openly and to work actively against the entrenched and often brutally enforced world of Jim Crow. Author of Killers of the Dream, The Journey, and One Hour and recipient of the Southern Authors Award in 1950, she was both celebrated and condemned for Strange Fruit, her first, and most accomplished, novel.

Incredible insight

I'd give it more than five stars if it was possible. What a courageous woman to have published this in 1949! I am so glad it was re-issued in 1994!!!! Smith provides insights on, and discusses in depth, things that are basic underpinnings of race relations in this country, but are rarely mentioned. The book is a must for anyone trying to gain insight into the foundations of white privilege and its implications, as well as improving race relations. An absolutely *incredible* book.

A must-read for understanding American History

I had a History professor who assigned this book for reading no matter what course he was teaching. I didn't understand why until several years after I finshed college. Ms. Smith describes the "ghosts" of the consciousness of the American south, the mythical fears that separate the races, in a way that is literate, poetic and unflinching. If you want to understand the history of the South, this book will fill in the gaps for you.

The Ghost of the South or the Ghost of America?

Ms. Smith's honesty and eloquence in telling a profoundly American story about the perfidy of the South of her childhood is a literary tour de force about an immensely important slice of American history. It is a profoundly American tragedy fashioned from the most basic of human materials, human fallibilities, many of which still consume us as Americans--black or white, north or south. This book is the most sombering account of who we Americans are--as opposed to who we wished we were--anyone is likely to ever encounter. Unfortunately, since her death, Ms. Smith's story of about race, sex, religion, politics, economics and deception in the south has become the American way of life, writ large.
