Thorough Book on Representational Painting Methods

This is a very detailed and well illustrated high quality book for the artist who wants to master traditional representational oil painting. I used to teach oil painting at the college level and would use this as a textbook. The lessons are thoughtful and move progressively from value to color study. I highly recommend this book to any painter at any level of development. I consider myself a professional, but everyone has more to learn.

The fourth book in Juliette Aristides' series on drawing and painting. Superbly written and filled with invaluable information for the advanced painter and beginning painter alike. As a portrait painter always pushing to improve, Juliette's books are all at the top of my recommendation list.

Hampered by a lack of direction

Sadly, like its predecessor The Stowaway, The Shadowmask read like fan fiction. However, where the Stowaway read like halfway decent fanfic that had ok plot and character cohesion with the exception of the brick wall ending... Well, I guess something broke when this reader crashed into the end of the first book. It picks up exactly where the last book left off, causing me to once again curse a blue streak over the terrible transitioning. My swearing swiftly morphed into multiple facepalms. To save the remnants of my sanity, I decided to treat it with all the respect I would give to a fan fiction story. Suffice to say, it did not fare well.

Most of the first third of book book felt like a romp of "how many characters from The Halfling's Gem can we string together at once?" There didn't seem to be much in the way of plot or character development aside from a few minor points. Those were swiftly drowned out by ten chapters of running amok with next to no plan. It was not particularly interesting to slog though, particularly since it began to chip at my suspension of disbelief in the characters.

The storyline is best described as "silly knees bent running about advancing behavior." I would have wished for the plot to even itself out at some point, but it never really did until the last eight chapters or so. By then, it was starting to resemble swiss cheese. Melted swiss cheese at that. Perhaps the original idea was to show exactly how big a role luck played in Maimun's life, but my patience with the character thinned more and more as the story progressed. Most of the plot felt haphazard, as if situations were thrown at the characters with the sole purpose to see what would happen and little regard for solving the problems the characters had. The framing story was just as silly as it was the first time around, providing a frame but little else of interest. Also, before I get lost in a mire of ranting, the book has the same "I ran into a brick wall" feeling that The Stowaway had. I am pretty sure that this should have been a two book series.

Quite a bit of my frustration stemmed from the first person narrative voice this book adheres to. Don't get me wrong, I love it when it is done well and I find character studies fascinating... assuming there is something interesting to them to begin with. The first book had enough contemplation and story logic that the inner voice wasn't annoying nor did it feel particularly limiting. However, with the Shadowmask the action seemed to crowd out most things character related. Then time spent alone with Maimun's thoughts frequently turned to blaming other people for his misfortunes and misconceptions. This would be ok if he snapped and asked someone in the know about what was going on once in a while (and maybe advance the plot progression past randomness), but he seemed stuck in this "I know everything" phase that began to grate on me. I started to look forwards to Robillard and Duedermont attempting to apply some semblance of common sense and discipline to Maimun. For someone spending a lot of time on a ship, the kid sure had a fuzzy concept of how ship discipline works. Asbeel was an absent menace most of the time and was not fleshed out further. Maimun was his own worst enemy.

The other thing that bothered me with this style of first person voice was the use of description. I'm used to it being extremely visceral, regardless of what age level the book is geared for. It felt dry and empty, lacking of any but the most intense of emotions and even those seemed flat. I started to long for perspectives from the other characters because Maimun just wasn't holding my attention the way that a first person narration should. everyone else was more interesting and more active than he was.

There were aspects of the book that I did like. Robillard made me happy every time he showed up. I was completely sympathetic with Duedermont's take on Maimun, since it so closely resembled my own. I was a bit happier through the last few chapters of the book because at that point something plot-like had begun to creep back from wherever it had wandered off to. It was frustrating to finally feel like the narrative was moving again only to have the book end.

There wasn't much to this book and it really didn't seem to advance the overall plot as well as it could have. Coupled with the issues I had with the narration and the ugly transitioning between this book and the last, I can't say that I hold out much hope for the final installment.

Better continuation

The Shadowmask is the second book in the Stone of Tymora trilogy by R.A. and Geno Salvatore. The first book is The Stowaway and the third is The Sentinels due out in September 2010.

The Shadowmask begins right were The Stowaway left off finishing the cliff hanger from that book. It also continues the plot of Maimun telling his tale to a pirate who has captured him and through continuing the telling of his tale is keeping him alive. Once Maimun's predicament is resolved at the beginning, he continues on his journey now to be rid of the stone he possesses. An unfortunate incident happens and he aligns himself once again with Captain Deudermont and the Sea Sprite crew to chase pirates and retrieves what he has lost. Yet again there are special appearances by Drizzt and company and the reader is given a clue as to the timeline of this story which takes place during and after events in The Halfling's Gem from The Icewind Dale Trilogy. A couple subplots spring up in this one with Maimun's infatuation with a certain girl, the ambitions of a pirate captain, a woman wearing a shadowmask who can turn into a raven, and the mystery of an island.

This story moves much better than the first. There was more mystery involved and so help my interest much more. There wasn't as much of a need for character introductions so the story moved along nicely. Once again, this one is a fast read with short chapters and large print. This makes it ideal for a younger audience to read. The character development is done very well. A couple of the characters grow in ways that make sense and continues to define their growth. There is even a special appearance from one of the past characters, but to refrain from spoilers I won't say who. I feel this is a good bridge novel and I am looking forward to continuing this story. Geno Salvatore is doing a wonderful job and I am impressed with the improvement of his writing. The details and depictions of battles are just about as good as his fathers. It flows wonderfully and the pacing keeps the reader turning the pages.

Some criticisms:

1. Like the fist book, this one is written in the first person POV. I have never been a fan of this POV, but have make exceptions in the past and have read some good books utilizing this style, however, for this series, I believe a third person POV would have made the story much better.

2. Maimun's constant blaming of others or circumstances gets old. Instead of learning more about some situations it just continues to be the blame game over and over.

3. As with the first book, this one also has a cliff hanger ending, albeit, this time at least there is more of an actual ending and the cliff hanger leads more into the next book. At least this time he didn't end the book in the middle of a battle.

Some positives:

1. To me, the writing was much better and the action sequences are fantastic. The wording is not over done for the young adult audience it is geared towards.

2. Also set up for a younger audience is the length of the short chapters. It helps to five the YA reader a feeling of accomplishment while enjoying a well told story.

3. There is more of a mystery set up with this one and the way it plays out is excellent. Though there are still some things left out, I still enjoyed the read. I hope more is explained in the final book.
Overall, I had a good time reading this one. It was far better paced than the first and once again, the characters used from his father's books only enhanced the adventure and were not a focal point. Mr. Salvatore did a good job of making his characters the main part of the book. I really am looking forward to the conclusion in The Sentinels.

I regret buying and reading this!! It is Aweful Offal!!!

I forced myself to read this book after struggling through the first one. I could not make it through the entire book. It is awful and the main character is a whiny punk. I have read all of the Drizzt books that RA Salvatore had to offer. I am extremely disappointed in this book. I understand that he was allowing his son to take the lead on this, I just wish that he would have guided him more. The main character is horrible and throws temper tantrums throughout the series. I cannot believe the non reaction that the main character received from the supporting characters that were on loan from RA Salvatore's other books. I wish that Drizzt and his friends were not involved in this trash!!

Do the homework and your life will improve

At first glance it seems this is going to be yet another motivational tome, and in a way it is, but it wanders to a lot of places I would not have expected. For example, there’s a bit on neurology near the beginning, as if to show that this is not your average self-help book. Another thing it tells you at the start is that this book is most focused on the brains of businesspeople.
But for the most part it is like others I’ve read in this genre. Each chapter covers something specific, such as sleep, rest, food; there’s even a piece on ego, which as it turns out is not completely bad for you. Also typical are all the personal stories, some better than others. One I clearly remember is about a friend of the author’s learning to ski. The man makes it clear that gathering the courage to go down the same run as his friends wasn’t about comparing himself to anyone, but simply telling himself he could do it. I find this to be a bad example for the simple reason that most wrong choices won’t get you killed, and a beginner skier going down an expert slope is definitely a wrong choice.
Every chapter has activations, small suggestions for the reader to do which will reinforce the lessons of the chapter. But some of these feel too much like homework, while others are rather obvious, common sense. There’s even a paragraph about yawning (which of course made me yawn). There’s some good stuff here, but of course it all depends on how much the reader is willing to do.

Not bad

Who wouldn’t want to improve their lot, getting greater success at work and enjoying life even more? All from just using their “grey matter” a little.

Well this book, which seeks to help the reader to activate their brain, promises a lot and believes that it is possible to harness the power of the mind, understand what makes us tick and move on to greater, err, greatness.

One cannot necessarily say that this is a bad book. You have to certainly believe in it and for many the book might not contain a lot of new stuff. Yet this is part of the book’s possible appeal as it brings together a lot of what might appear common sense and offers a package for those who need it. Sometimes the most blindingly obvious, simple things are the things we manage to overlook, so maybe it doesn’t hurt to take a refresher course just in case… With this book you get that refresher course (or more) at a fairly low price.

The style of the book was better than one feared, as sadly this reviewer has became a little overly sceptical after seeing so many books (that are very popular in the United States) which are rather “rah rah, you can do it” (high on hype and low on quality content) over time: all they probably do is add a few more dollars to the author’s bank account. Not everybody necessarily wins… In this book, the author gives a lot of advice and practical examples so that the reader can hopefully engage their brain and move forward, possibly leading to greater things, thanks to a mix of science, considered thought, experience and a large dosing of common sense.

It is both a light read and a detailed “jumping off point” to many interesting, advanced areas of study. You may get out as much as you put in to it. It could be a nice travel companion or one of those long reads that can leave a deep impression.

Older Edition Works Fine

I ordered this trxtbook for my veterinary immunology class. It is the old edition so I saved about a hundred dollars. It worked fine.
I wouldn't be too concerned about getting the older edition. I'm sure it's missing some more current info but as a doctor you'll be going to the research for current topics anyway, not dusting off some old book from medical school.

I think this is one of the best books I read so far about predictive analytics

I am a very experienced data scientist and I was pleased to learn that predictive analytics for dummies introduces, for the first time, biologically inspired algorithms that can be applied to make predictions. I found that the visualization chapter was very helpful. The authors introduced innovative ways to visualize analytics results, especially when it comes to forward insights. This book covers how to do predictive analytics; the authors explain in a step by step the roadmap to do so. Over all, I think this is one of the best books I have read so far about predictive analytics.

Irritating errors

There is good content in this book, but its reliability is called into serious question by some very irritating and careless errors.

In more than one place, the book gives a link for "extras" that are allegedly available. This link is invalid; there is no such page at the dummies.com site. This is so egregiously over the line that I am being generous in giving this book more than one star. How careless can you be not to ensure that a link on your own site works? What does that carelessness say about all of the content in the book?

In the section on k-means, the tables are so filled with errors that it is impossible to try to tell what the point should be. At one point, 2+3/5 is listed as 2.4 rather than 2.5. 2+3+6/3 is 3.6 rather than 3.7. But in another place, 10+14+10/3=11.4. So numbers are rounded down them they shouldn't be, and rounded up when they shouldn't be. It is obvious that numbers were typed in, and then not even glanced at casually for accuracy.

Even worse is table 6-7, where, we're told, "every element" is iterated. It lists items 1 through 4, and 6 and 7, but 5 is missing, for no apparent reason. All in all, this section almost seems designed to create maximum confusion. I cannot glean how a k-means is calculated. The text is not entirely clear, and the numbers in table 6-7 are junk, so I can not try to reverse-engineer the process.

There is a section on vector support machines that does not explain what a support vector machine is. We are told that it is a binary classifier. We are told that it uses a function. We are told that it is robust. We are not told anything about what distinguishes SVM from any other binary classifier. We have no idea of how to construct an SVM.

The next section, on naive Bayes says at one point, "P(X|Y) is the probability that event X will happen, given that event Y has happened." This is correct. Shortly after, "P(CR_fair|X) is the probability that a customer's credit rating is fair and the customer purchases product X." This is not correct. It is the probability that the customer's credit rating is fair GIVEN that the customer purchases product X. So I have to scrap the section on naive Bayes as well. There are numerous other problems with the notation in this section, including the use in places of "/" in place of "|". Sometimes P is italic, sometimes it is not.

These errors and deficiencies need to be fixed and a new version of the e-book made available, or at the very least, an errata section needs to be established on dummies.com, the entire book should be carefully reviewed, and the dead link needs to be fixed. The book never should have been published with such sloppy errors. If the purchase price had not been as low as it is, I would be demanding my money back. As it is, I will give the authors a limited period of time to make this good. If they do, I will revise this review.

These errors are serious enough that I have a hard time imagining how anyone could post a five-star review, if you get my drift.

Clean up the errors! Edit the book! WARNING to readers--wait for the revised edition.

This is a good introduction to the topic, but unfortunately contains numerous errors in the examples given. This leaves the reader struggling..."Did the author make a mistake? Or do I not understand it?" It's a major distraction and completely frustrating, especially if someone is new to the topic (or math phobic). The rest of the content is good and worthy of a look.

If you can't wait for the second edition, and buy this one, don't get hung up if an example doesn't match your expectation. It's probably the author who is wrong.

Don't waste your time

Very basic book. The bottom left corner of the cover states "video education included". Since no DVD comes with the book I emailed the publisher to see how to access the videos (?online). I never received a response. Like many trading books, this book has an impressive title, an inflated price and little value.

Kate Bornstein is an author, playwright and performance artist. Kate's plays and performance pieces include Strangers in Paradox, Hidden: A Gender, The Opposite Sex Is Neither, Virtually Yours, and y2kate: gender virus 2000. Kate's books are taught in over 120 colleges and universities around the world, and ze has performed hir work live on college campuses as well as in theaters and performance spaces across the USA, in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria. Kate lives in New York, NY.

S. Bear Bergman is a writer, a theater artist, an instigator, a gender-jammer, and a good example of what happens when you overeducate a contrarian. Ze is the creator of three award-winning solo performances, as well as a frequent contributor to anthologies on all manner of topics. Bear lives in Ontario, Canada.

Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation

Sixteen years ago, Kate Bornstein published a land mark book in the transgender community, titled Gender Outlaws: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us. It became a landmark work, exploring gender roles, attitudes and the fact that there are far more than just two genders. Now, in the year 2010, Kate and her co-author Bear Bergman have brought forth this generation's version, Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation.
Kate Bornstein, born into a male body in 1948, transitioned to a woman in 1986, and settled into the lesbian community as an author, playwright and gender theorist. However, while she definitely did not feel that she was a male, she also questioned whether or not she was female, stating that her transition to such was because it was the only other option to being male available to her. She launched into explorations of the gender binary and questioned the rigid idea that that only two polarities of gender - male or female - exist. Her books include Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us, Roadkill: An Infobahn Erotic Adventure (Novel, co-authored with Caitlin Sullivan), My Gender Workbook: How to Become a Real Man, a Real Woman, the Real You, or Something Else Entirely and Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws.
Bear Bergman's story comes from the opposite side of the gender fence. Ze was born in 1974, and is an activist, writer, theater performance artist and poet. Bear's work and life questions all facets of gender and gender expression. Hir's books include Butch is a Noun, The Nearest Exit May be Behind You, and now, with Bornstein, Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation.
Gender Outlaws: the Next Generation is an anthology containing an Introduction, an Intermission and an Epilogue by Kate and Bear; and many essays, poems, and comics all profoundly exploring, deconstructing, rebuilding and revaluing the concept of "gender". Also included is one recipe for vegan curry.
I love the multitude of voices in this book, the varieties of viewpoints and artistic expressions! The book is divided into five parts; Do I Look Like an Outlaw to You?, Being Reconfigured is Not the Same as Being Reimagined...Which is Why I am as Cute as I Happen to Be, It Might Not Be a Picnic, But There's a Great Buffet, and the final, powerful, And Still We Rise.
Part one; Do I Look Like an Outlaw to You? opens with the essay "We're All Somebody's Freak" by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, founder of the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Going straight for the heart of the matter, and setting the pace for the rest of the anthology, Smith questions the prejudices and barriers that exist within the transgender community towards each other.
In Part Two entitled "Being Reconfigured is Not the Same as Being Reimagined", "Taking Up Space" by Kyle Lukoff, addresses the powerful issues of eating disorders and transgenderism. "The Wrong Body" by Scott Turner Schofield deals with the question of the bodies we are born into.
Part Three, "...which is Why I am as Cute as I Happen to Be" has one of the most humorous pieces in the book, "The Secret Life of My Wiener" by Corry Schmanke Parrish, as well as the return of a black belt martial artist to the mats and gyms once denied her in "Living Well and Coming Free", by Ryka Aoki.
In Part Four, "It Might Not Be a Picnic, But There's a Great Buffet", "The Manly Art of Pregnancy" by j wallace explores being a man and pregnant, a scenario that is having more and more impact in today's society. "Transgressing Gender at Passover with Jesus!" by Peterson Toscano restories one of the Bible's great stories in transgender terms, and "Today's New Name May Be Tomorrow's Old" by Sassafras Lowry confronts the taboo subject of transitioning and then de-transitioning in the trans subculture.
Finally, Part Five, And Still We Rise takes on the tragedy of abuse and murder that haunts transgenders today, giving powerful voice to the violence we face. "Princess" a comic by Christine Smith addresses humorously but with great force, bullying issues faced in the schools. "Marsha P Johnson::ten suns the transformer" is an elegy for Marsha P Johnson, a famous Drag Queen whose death was possibly murder, but ruled a suicide. "Shot, Stabbed, Choked, Strangled, Broken: a ritual for November 20th" by Roz Kaveney is a haunting poem for the victims remembered on the Transgender Day of Remembrance. These are only parts of this stunning anthology - 47 authors, poets and artists all told speak out on the fluidity, the power and the changes in gender in the world today.
The book is bracketed by conversations between Bear Bergman and Kate Bornstein, a rollicking walk down memory lane of their association and the changes in the transgender community, (I am still boggled by mental images of Sarah Palin and Kate Bornstein on a desert island!) and a look to the future of Gender to come. It is not just a book about transgender, but about gender itself, how it is shaped in society and how it shapes individuals and how those individuals continue to stand societal conventions on end.
There are some shocking and unsettling moments in the book - "In Our Skin" by A. P. Andre and Luis Guterierrez Mock is the transcript of an erotic performance piece (complete with photographs) of love making on stage that bends gender in dramatic ways. This piece will be startling and perhaps difficult for individuals who pick this book up to read with no previous contact with transgender and gender bending cultures. "Jihad" by Azadeh Arsanjani and "Pilgrimage" by Zev Al-Walid are powerful, much needed essays of transgenderism within the Muslim faith that may also be unexpected and disconcerting in today's political climate. All told, this book in its entirety is a powerful cohesive exploration of gender that speaks forth- rightly and with depth, poignancy and humor to a world that faces bewildering changes in the map of gender roles and expressions in the world today.
It would be my hope that "Gender Outlaws: the Next Generation" may reach a wide audience; not just those within the transgender community, but instead, travel even further to the world at large, becoming this generation's contributions to the changes in gender in our world. I cannot recommend it highly enough! Finally, the books dedication to Bear Bergman's son, Stanley Safran Bergman says it all - "...to the next generation".

Impressive anthology of diverse "genderqueer" voices

Fifteen years after Kate Borstein's landmark "Gender Outlaws" anthology, which gave the definitive platform to varied transgender voices, she joins well-known gender activist, author and performance artist, S. Bear Bergman, in this ambitious and impressive collection of prose, poetry, graphics and observations from 47 extremely diverse individuals involved in trans and "genderqueer" issues throughout the world, many of whom were quite young at the time of Borstein's original work. They illustrate how gender issues and stereotypical perceptions and attitudes in today's society and culture affect their lives, and provide a valuable insight to those both inside and outside of the movement. Facing a myriad of obstacles, they remain positive and focused on a future in which gender will be considered less of a given but more of a byproduct of being.

I'm a gay man who considered myself fairly well informed about transgender issues, but this book opened my eyes to issues and problems I could have never imagined as an outsider. From the "Catch 22" of being identified by others as a gender you were never comfortable with and left behind, to being criticized by other transsexuals because one declined (or could not afford) gender reassignment surgery, to the detailed experiences of a pregnant "transman," I not only learned a great deal from this book, but firmly now believe it makes the obstacles that gay men and lesbians face seem simple, by comparison. Recommended reading, five stars out of five.

MOAR!

An AMAZING anthology of people's voices. It's heartening and happy and sad and sexy all rolled up into one fantastic book that I absolutely adore. There's a lovely piece by Julia Serano about the countless ways to express a trans identity, followed appropriately by Sam Peterson's section heralding a fourth wave of feminism - one of compassion. Every work in this book is beautiful. It's also comforting, as someone who isn't able to reach out into a local queer community, to know I'm not alone.
