Great book for self-study

Recently I began building little analog circuit devices as a hobby. I wanted to start learning how to analyze existing devices and learn how they work, as well as how to design my own circuits. I had taken an electronics lab as part of my undergraduate degree, and we used "The Art of Electronics" by Horowitz and Hill, which is a popular book, so I picked up a used copy.

Although Art of Electronics has lots of good stuff in it, it doesn't really explain how many of the circuits work. It's more of a recipe book. Electronic Principles by Malvino does a good job of explaining how different circuits work. It has extensive coverage of different types of op-amp circuits that is especially useful. As a sometime physics teacher, if I were going to teach an electronics lab I would probably recommend this book to my students as a supplement to whatever textbook the school decided they should use.

Great applied analog electronics book

This is a really great book, everything is explained in a very relaxed and clear way. It really seems like the author is a great educator who wishes for the students to understand it as simple as possible. Yet that is also the downside of the book, its very simple, theres no calculus, the algebra needed is elementary, and math seem avoided whenever possible.

The great thing about this book is that it covers several useful (yet simple) applications, so it combined with a more rigourous and in depth book such as Sedra & Smith "Microelectronic circuits" which lacks applications but covers most of the technical and physical aspects needed to know about electronic devices, will give you a solid understanding regarding analog electronics.

IGNORE THE STARS I SELECTED. I haven't read this book yet.

This is NOT basic electronics. It presupposes a good understanding of basic electronics.

I didn't know that when I bought it. Had I known that, I definitely would've started out with another book. Since I'm now working on that other book (Bernard Grob, Basic Electronics) I can't tell you more about this one yet.

The story behind the greatest band you've never heard

The box set contains a picture book(Images), the authorized biography of Dream Theater(Words), and a companion CD with previously unreleased songs, demos, and live performances. This is a must-have for Dream Theater fans or those who are fans of VH1's Behind the Music. "Words" follows the band from the early beginning before they formed, through each album and all the conflicts along the way. The band's struggles with management and record labels consume most of the pages. Rich Wilson does a great job of giving differing recollections of those involved in specific incidents. This book gives the details of the goings-on that fans have only read snippets about on the internet. Practically all the current and former band members, producers and engineers involved with the band contribute to the book(except Kevin Moore). This is a well-written story of the band that all fans will enjoy.

Meticulously researches, no punches pulled

I read this book with high expectations and a sense of urgency. I had become a crazy Dream Theater nut and had read a great deal about the band over two years. Yet, my understanding of their history was not complete. Wilson's book is methodical in nature; each period is covered in great detail. Unlike many biographies, this book does not gloss over delicate matters (such as Portnoy's substance addictions). Nor does it serve as a "Behind the Music" type of foray only into intra-band squabbles. The book gives a balanced and ultimately inspiration account of some of the greatest musicians of their generation.

A Fantastic Read for the Dream Theater Fanatic!!!

I was first introduced to Dream Theater by a good friend of mine back around the time that "Falling Into Infinity" was released, and they have become my favorite band of all-time as the years have gone by. So it was perfectly natural for me to want the "definitive" Dream Theater history, endorsed by the band. So I paid the $85 and received the books and the bonus CD. Was it worth it?

YES! The package immediately blew me away, with a protective hard-cover case with a beautiful gold-foil Majesty logo on the front. The books are also hardcover and the CD comes in a very secure slot in the front of the "Images" book. I decided to read the "Words" biography in conjunction with the "Images" book as I came to each era of the band, and I came away from the experience with mixed feelings. I found the story to be VERY informative, especially on how Dream Theater began and got through their early years to their big hit with "Pull Me Under". I felt the pacing was very nicely done, up until the last few chapters that detailed the most recent releases; it seemed that the author just kind of wrote to a template in a hurry to finish the book. Besides that, again the story was fantastic! I particularly found the wealth of interviews and history by each individual member the most fun to read; James LaBrie in particular is quite a funny guy, and reading the most quite member, John Myung talk about his passion for the music was welcome too.

The downsides that I found in the collection were the large amount of misspellings throughout the biography, and also the lack of captioning towards the end of the "Images" book. It left me feeling that the book was rushed at the end for printing, but I found that this collection was still worth it, because you really feel what the band struggled through in order to keep true to their vision and artistic integrity despite the constant struggles internally and externally with the industry.

To the Dream Theater fanatic, this book is a MUST, but to casual listeners or even to those who may not be familiar with Dream Theater at all, it may be passable. For a good read about an artistic band that defied the odds over and over again and are still going strong, it is highly recommended:)

Literary analysis at its finest

Reading this book was like stepping back into one of my college english classes... not only did I find it extremely enjoyable reading, but I found myself alternating between nodding my head and slapping myself on the head (figuratively--"duh, of course, why didn't I see that before?!"). I strongly recommend this book for any Harry Potter fan plus any parent who is concerned about letting their children read the books. I'm in my 40s and have read the (HP) books myself 4 times each and enjoyed them thoroughly each and every reading!

straight forward analysis of Harry Potter

I have read many of John Granger's books and am completely enamored with The Deathly Hallows Lectures. I did not think that I would that this book supplant it as my favorite of Granger's writing, but it might be. Where the Lectures are a strong academic analysis after the completion of series, this book is written in a more straight forward manner and is the book that I will recommend to my friends and family who are more casual fans of the series. It should be noted that this is the third edition of the book previously titled Looking for God in Harry Potter, so if you think Christians are trying to force their world view into the Harry Potter series, then this isn't the book for you. Although you don't have to be a Christian to enjoy this book. J.K. Rowling has called the Christian symbolism in the books, "obvious," and she's writing in a tradition of British literature that is very Christian. Rowling is writing about her faith and you don't have to be religious to see how the final book in the series is a story to symbolize her personal faith and the struggle that ensues to even have faith. John Granger successfully synthesizes this and much more into this book to show how "a children's story" has become the most popular epic book in the last hundred years. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to see the mechanics of why the Harry Potter series entralls millions of people worldwide.

A Christian Scholar's Interpretation of the Harry Potter series

This book presents two sections in which John Granger gives his interpretation of the elements that make J.K Rowling's Harry Potter books such compelling reading.The first ten chapters are connected to elements that are contained in Rowling's books that make them both enjoyable yet seriously themed. My personal favorites from the first section were Chapter 4, which deals with Alchemy and connects the process to spiritual growth, Chapter 9, which examines the symbols used in Harry Potter, and Chapter 10, "Fun with Names," which examines the meaning behind many of the character's names in the series.(Granger's take on the dual meanings of Neville Longbottom are almost worth the price of the book alone!) Chapters 11 through 19 deal with the individual Harry Potter books, and here Granger examines the books with a Christian viewpoint that addresses the major themes found in the series of books. Any reader of the Harry Potter books will find enlightenment in this book, but it is especially apt for Christian readers of the series who have had to deal with bias from other Christians who have negative views of the books.

Thorough text

I was recommended this text by a professor. Unfortunately it is out of print, as the author passed away, but the author did a very good job of explaining concepts. In a few spots some clarification could be used but I have not thoroughly worked through the book yet. If you are looking for a text to go deeper than Pierret's "Semiconductor Device Fundamentals" then this is for you.

A charming Christmas romance

Falling For Christmas is the introductory story ( a 0.5 if you will) for the new series Falling For The Freemans which debuts in 2016. We are introduced to a truly tiny town of Creighton Falls, New York, that has been on the downswing over the last years. The main and largest building in town is the hotel which the Freeman family owns and have basically abandoned. There are a very few business still operating, barely… and some are on their very last legs. It is in this tiny, dying town that our heroine finds herself in a blinding blizzard.

Hannah had gotten into her car and simply drove. She was escaping a fancy Christmas weekend house party full of her colleagues and one ex-boyfriend. The ex with his new girlfriend on his arm … and the snide and hurtful comments, glances and knowing cuts from the people she worked with. She escaped from an estate full of plastic, mean hearted, nasty people straight into a raging snowstorm. Driving almost 300 miles from New York City might not have been the best idea Hannah had ever thought up – but she could not stay there and the drive on the highway had left her mind open to just reliving the past. Now with the snow falling faster than her windshield wipers could keep up with she decided to turn off at the next exit and look for shelter.

Creighton Falls – home to… nothing. No hotel, no motel, no B & B, just wide open spaces. When she finally saw headlights through the snow she flagged down the driver. That act would change her future.

Sam never expected to find this city beauty on the side of the road, obviously stranded by the snowstorm. The very last thing he wanted was company but he couldn’t leave her out here to freeze. So he offered to take her to the only place he knew that had an extra room… his home. He understood her reluctance, but preservation will almost always win over caution.

Falling For Christmas is a wonderful story of two hurting people who on the surface are globally different – but at the core, they get each other and compliment each other. Sam is suffering and believing that nothing good will ever come his way again. Hannah believes the critical lies of her ex, that she’s not good enough. Together they discover that good can come into your life and that you are more than good enough to love, you are perfect. What more could we possibly want in a romance than the affirmation of what love is supposed to be at the base – love, respect and liking the one who rocks your world? This one deserves to be on your Christmas reading list.

Creating a New Life and Love

Stranded in snow, no warm clothes, and running from humiliation finds Hannah Ford at the end of the off ramp to Creighton Falls. There is nothing in sight-not a gas station, not a house, nothing except falling snow and darkness. As she is starting off to find anything resembling life, two giant headlights appear and she flags the truck down.
Inside the truck is Sam Taylor, a very reclusive man, who offers to let her stay at his place as there is no hotel or B&B in Creighton Falls. Reluctantly, Hannah agrees to go home with him as she doesn’t really have any other alternative but to freeze in her car. It seems like fate has had a hand in their meeting but it might not be a lasting fate but one that does change their lives.

Lovely holiday read

When Hannah Ford got upset at a holiday party when her ex-boyfriend showed up with his new girlfriend she wasn’t thinking straight when she hopped in a car and decided to just drive to get away and clear her head. Right before Christmas she heads north until she ends up near the Canadian border in a small town with a blizzard steadily coming down. Pulling off the highway her small car immediately gets stuck in the unplowed roads.

Sam Taylor is out on the roads that night having come from plowing a driveway when he pulls over to offer Hannah help. With only one place to rent a room in the small town and it being closed for the holidays Sam offers to let Hannah stay with him which she reluctantly agrees to. With the blizzard dropping nearly three feet of snow and the snow plows no where in sight Hannah ends up having to spend the holiday with Sam who is very much used to being alone on the holidays.

Another lovely holiday read that has the characters bringing out the best in each other during a tough situation and dealing with their own ghosts haunting their holidays. Sam and Hannah couldn’t be more opposite of each other but when together they just seem to work.

At novella length this is another great quick read romance I’d recommend to curl up with during the holiday season.

A 400-page memoir from the Quiet Beatle? Can it be? Well, yes and no: only about 60 pages of this earnest tome, originally published in 1980, are devoted to Harrison's recollections of life before, during and (notably) after the Beatles. His memories, which manage to feel fresh and distant at the same time, come to readers via transcripts of his conversations with Derek Taylor (1932-1997), the Beatles press officer and ghostwriter of Brian Epstein's memoir. Harrison (1943-2001) was only in his late 30s when I Me Mine came out-the Beatles had formed, changed music forever and disbanded before his 28th birthday. The rest of this volume consists of photos with whimsical captions ("the author enjoying a cheese sandwich with some friends" is assigned to a picture of Harrison with a sitar) and facsimiles of his handwritten lyrics (including a fairly different version of "Taxman"), each accompanied by a brief explanation (ideas expressed in "It's All Too Much," for example, were inspired by LSD and "confirmed in meditation"). Most of the songs were composed after Harrison's immersion in Hinduism; divorced from their melodies, lyrics espousing love, peace and harmony tend to take on a certain sameness. This volume offers much to Beatles zealots, but for the casual fan, Harrison will likely remain as admirable and as inscrutable as ever. B&w photos and illustrations throughout.

Originally released in 1980, this volume includes some very casual recollections by "the quiet one" about his life, including his Liverpool childhood and interest in music, meeting the other kids who would become the 20th century's most influential band, his fascination with Eastern religions, and more. The book features roughly 50 photos taken throughout his life, but the meat of the book is the more than 80 song lyricsDmany of which are reproductions of his hand-written sheets with corrections intactDalong with background on each. There is also a new introduction by Harrison's widow. For millions of diehard fans, there is no such thing as too much information on the Beatles, so this should circulate well.

'If sales of THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY are anything to go by, public demand for new Beatles product is as strong as ever. While, I, ME, MINE is not strictly speaking a new book, such is its rarity, except at Beatles memorabilia fairs (at vastly inflated prices) that is 400 pages and 200 illustration will be treated asa newly discovered treasure trove of insider detail about the biggest band in pop history.' Barry Forshaw PUBLISHING NEWS 9/8/02 Olivia Harrison is not doing any interviews apart from an American chat show (although there has been a lot of interest from the national press) and we do not have serial rights, so we are concentrating on reviews for I, ME, MINE. Capitol Records released 2 versions of George Harrison's last studio album, "Brainwashed", on 19/11. The memorial concert at the Royal Albert Hall has been covered in HELLO and some nationals.

A Treasured Read for theTrue George Fan

If you are looking for a hefty read, this is not it. The actual memoir is rather short, but very interesting and worth a read. If you are just a biography buff or a Beatle buff, I would skip it. If you are a true GH fan, then I recommend it. Lots of photos and handwritten notes from George about the writings of his songs and some very personal details of his early life and journey toward finding peace. A very intimate peek into his soul. I will never give this book away.

How a songwriter's autobiography should be.

This book doesn't spend too much time on trivial gossip, or that other Beatle junk with the obsession on Jelly Babies and cutsie matching suits. This is real. George only goes into his life in 60 pages, which tells of his growth as a spiritual human being. His feelings on the whole Beatlemania stuff, and what is really important. The emphasis are on his songs that he wrote from "Don't Bother Me" up until 1980, when this book came out. I remember being a teenager going to the library and reading this book several times over. I am always facinated with what inspires a person with a particular song, and with many of these songs, it can be as simple as waiting for a friend to show up to your home, or warning another friend about his ruining his teeth with candy, or it can be something greater than our selves and be about a relationship with God. One thing I remember (and I might be wrong) is that the layout of the original book is different from this one. I seem to remember there being pictures throughout the book, and this new edition, they are all at the front, with the captions at the back. I like the addition of the new preface by his widow.

Very Interesting

I, Me, Mine is a good book for a fan of George Harrison who may not know much about him. Written by George himself along with his friend Derek Taylor, the book features an autobiographical section, a photo album (with captions in the back), and the lyrics of all of George's songs that had been written up to that point along with a written passage about each song by George himself.
I particularly liked the idea that this book wasn't only an autobiography. I loved being able to see the (sometimes) original lyrics to George's songs and reading what they were about, or how he felt about them.

A Benchmark Biography

As a historian of American religion and Adventism I am pleased with this new biography of William Miller. Rowe is the first person I am aware of to meticulously go through all of Miller's extant papers--in places as diverse as Aurora University, Colgate Seminary in Rochester, and the papers discovered in the William Miller home now owned by Adventist Heritage Ministry. Rowe, who is not an adherent of any of the Adventist traditions, has done Miller and the story of Adventism a great service by demythologizing apologetics and hagiography and presenting Miller within his historical, cultural, and religious milieu. Some Seventh-day Adventists may be surprised as they read this biography to learn that Miller never became a Sabbatarian, yet I think an adherent of any Adventist tradition will find this a sympathetic yet compelling biography of the founder of a major religious movement. What is surprising is that no historian has written a biography sooner. The good news is that this biography was worth the wait!

The first scholarly biography of a seminal figure in American religious history

Incredibly, this 2008 publication is the first scholarly biography of William Miller, the Deist-turned-Baptist farmer who touched off one of the major religious movements of the Second Great Awakening. David L. Rowe's book, therefore, fills a significant gap in the literature on this period of American history, and on American religion in general. It's good, then, that it also happens to be a work of quality, one that sympathetically portrays its subject without whitewashing his flaws, and one that at the end leaves the reader with the sense of having encountered a fully-rounded human being--of having "gotten to know" Miller. Though it builds on the work of earlier scholars, including Mark Noll, Whitney Cross, and George Knight, the work impresses particularly in its extensive primary research, with much of the narrative propelled by quotations from Miller's own letters and from contemporary sources both sympathetic to and critical of Miller.

At 235 pages, the text is relatively slim. One wonders if a bit more heft in the volume would have allowed Rowe to draw out further some of his interesting insights into Miller's development. As a student of the intellectual history of this period--and as a teacher constantly looking for new approaches to share with my students--I found particularly interesting Rowe's discussion of Miller's thought as representing the transition from the objective, orderly, and systematic worldview of the Enlightenment to the personalism and affective emphases of romanticism. For instance, Rowe quotes two different descriptions by Miller, written three years apart, of his own conversion; the first emphasizes the Bible as rule and light, while the second finds in Jesus a comfort and a friend. Unfortunately, this discussion is fairly brief. Granted that the book is a biography and not an intellectual history, I would still have relished a more thorough reflection on this aspect of Miller's development.

Rowe's treatment of the Great Disappointment of Oct. 22, 1844, at first struck me as too restrained. I had expected, I suppose, that this event would take up more space in a book like this than it actually does. In reality, though, Rowe gives us a very good (if rather brief) picture of the Disappointment itself while also exploring the conflicts within Miller himself and within his movement in the aftermath. The picture of Miller that emerges here--a man whose diffidence and uncertainty helped to create much of the confusion and many of the divisions among his followers--is very compelling. Disciples like Joshua Himes, though sometimes frustrated by these qualities in Miller, remained faithful to the cause, and Rowe's portrayal of this relationship in particular is quite moving.

God's Strange Work is highly recommended for students of American religion and American history. Psychologists and philosophers of religious experience will also find it useful. It contains much that is of benefit to scholars, but it is clearly meant to be a book suitable for non-specialists as well.

Definitely worth reading more than once!

As a former Seventh-day Adventist, when I decided recently to explore the faith tradition that has had a profound impact on who I am, my first criterion was that I read a work that was not written by an SDA. Not that I despise Adventist writings, but I needed to have my heritage explained by someone who didn't feel compelled to defend the faith.

Enter David Rowe, whose book bores beneath the origin story of Millerism and reveals a man: a war veteran, father, husband, son, brother, constable, farmer, and anti-abolitionist. Thanks to Rowe, Miller becomes a human being whose search for hope in a broken world brought him to the forefront of one of the least understood movements of 19th century American evangelicalism, yet nonetheless profound in the impact it left when it famously fell apart after the Great Disappointment of 1844. I think every person who reads this book will find something in William Miller that will resonate with them as well, regardless of faith tradition. You may not agree with Miller or appreciate the Seventh-day Adventist Church, but you don't have to in order to be floored by the narrative presented in this book.
